Tigers take punch, grind Loggers down:
Onalaska made Napavine bleed.
Napavine made Onalaska pay.
The Loggers threw the best punch that the Tigers have seen in a regular-season game in quite some time, but all it did was delay things, as a slow avalanche of big plays buried them in a 58-14 Napavine win in hostile territory.
“It’s always good beating Ony,” Napavine quarterback Ashton Demarest said. “It’s Ony. I love beating them.”
After falling behind 8-0 early and hitting rough patches on offense, the Tigers (2-0) ground their way to a lead by the end of the first quarter, on a pair of Demarest runs. By halftime, it was 30-14, capped off by a Demarest touchdown pass to Colin Shields in the final 10 seconds of the second quarter.
Still, the Logger faithful had plenty of buzz, down just two possessions at the break. So after only managing 37 rushing yards in the first half, the Tigers went to work crafting a haymaker.
“We had to stay the course and regroup,” Napavine coach Josh Fay said. “It took longer than I’d hoped it would, but I thought we responded at halftime, and were pretty focused coming out.”

Winlock elementary welcomes retired reserve sergeant as school resource officer:
Retired Toledo reserve officer Randy Pennington was getting ready to return his patrol car after his last shift with the police department in July 2022 when he got a call from Winlock Police Chief Stephen Valentine.
“He said, ‘instead of turning it in, you should just change colors,’” Pennington said, recalling how Valentine asked him to come work in Winlock.
“I said, ‘’Now, Steve, I’m not chasing no more bad guys.’ And he said, ‘Well that’s what’s really cool: is you don’t have to chase bad guys.’”
Valentine had wanted to assign Pennington to Winlock Elementary School as a school resource officer: a law enforcement officer who is responsible for safety and crime prevention within a school.
“I said, ‘No more chasing bad guys?’ ‘Not unless they’re at school.’ ‘Hey, that sounds like something I can do,’” Pennington said, recalling the conversation with Valentine.

HUNTING HIGHLIGHT: "Tanner Tobin, 14, of Chehalis, poses with the 7x7 bull she harvested with her youth elk tag that she drew through a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife drawing. The hunt location was near the former Centralia mine. Hunted this bull for four days until she had the perfect 230-yard shot and dropped him in his tracks."

“My life was spared,” he said. “If I’d been driving one second faster, the tree would’ve hit me in the head, and I’d be dead.”
He thinks about that often, and the sequence of events that followed that kept him alive.
“There must be something worth keeping me around for,” he continued. “If it’s just to be a husband, dad and cop, that’s good enough for me.”
But there is more, he believes.
“There may eventually be someone who sees me and grows up to be a cop when they didn’t think it was something they could do,” he said.
That means doing the job every day, just like any other cop.
