One Woman or Girl Killed Every Hour in Gaza, UN Reports Amid Devastating Conflict
Since the onset of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza in October 2023, the humanitarian crisis has escalated to catastrophic levels. According to the United Nations, more than 28,000 people have lost their lives, and among them, one woman or girl is killed every hour. This staggering figure highlights the devastating toll the ongoing conflict has taken on civilian lives, particularly women and children.
The UN and several humanitarian organizations have raised alarms over what they describe as an unprecedented level of suffering in Gaza. Homes, hospitals, and schools have not been spared in the violence, forcing more than a million Palestinians to flee their homes. Basic necessities such as clean water, food, and medical supplies are increasingly scarce, exacerbating the already dire conditions.
Women and girls face unique vulnerabilities in such crises. Beyond the immediate threat of death and injury, many are at heightened risk of gender-based violence, displacement, and loss of access to essential healthcare, including maternal and reproductive services. The trauma inflicted on Gaza’s female population is both visible and invisible—etched in physical destruction and in the emotional scars that will last generations.
International calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian corridors have grown louder, but the violence continues. UN officials have emphasized the urgent need for protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law. Without a swift and meaningful resolution, the cost—especially to women and children—will continue to rise.
As the world watches, the question remains: how many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken? The time to prioritize humanity is now.
