American technology giant Starlink has officially launched its satellite-based high-speed internet operations in Bangladesh by setting up a ground station at Rajshahi Hi-Tech Park. The company has leased one acre of land for 40 years, marking a major step toward expanding digital connectivity across the country.
Under the agreement, Starlink will pay USD 2 per square metre annually along with a service charge. The company’s local partner, Bondstine Technology Limited (BTL), is overseeing infrastructure development and operational management.
According to BTL Managing Director and CEO Meer Shahrukh Islam, the Rajshahi station will function as a central hub to provide high-speed satellite internet services nationwide. Starlink has also installed ground stations at Kaliakoir Hi-Tech Park and Jessore Hi-Tech Park, strengthening its national network. Ten antennas are currently operational in Rajshahi, with another 30 planned for installation soon.

Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves have climbed above the $27 billion mark, signaling renewed economic strength driven by robust remittance inflows and export growth. According to Bangladesh Bank, reserves now stand at $27.12 billion, up from $26.80 billion earlier this month — a promising rebound that highlights the country’s growing financial stability.

The central bank’s strategic move to purchase over $2 billion from commercial banks through 14 auctions in the last three months has further reinforced the reserves. Economists view this surge as a major boost to investor confidence and a positive indicator that Bangladesh is regaining momentum amid global economic challenges.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has rejected a proposal from the Trump administration that would have granted preferential access to federal funding in exchange for adopting new campus policies. In a letter to U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, MIT President Sally Kornbluth said the deal titled the "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education" was inconsistent with the university's core values and would restrict freedom of expression independence. and institutional
The proposed compact required universities 10 cap international undergraduate admissions at 15%, restrict administrators from commenting on political events, enforce standardized testing, and allow the use of "lawful force" to prevent campus protests. It also sought to ensure universities maintained an environment for conservative ideas and would penalize institutions financially if they violated the terms. Other schools, including Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Texas, were also invited to sign the deal.
Kornbluth stated that MIT already promotes free expression and academic rigor independently of government mandates, and emphasized that scientific funding should be based solely on merit California Governor Gavin Newsom warned that any Califomia university signing the compact would lose state funding. Several other universities and research institutions have also opposed similar federal restrictions in recent months.

Bangladesh recorded a strong remittance inflow of $2.68 billion in September, reflecting a 12% year-on-year growth, according to Bangladesh Bank data. During the July–September quarter, total inflows reached $7.58 billion, supported by tighter controls on informal hundi channels and a reduced exchange rate gap. Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited topped the chart by channeling $699 million in remittances during the quarter.

This surge follows a historic milestone in the previous fiscal year, when total remittances surpassed $30 billion for the first time in Bangladesh’s economic history. Economists believe this sustained growth highlights increased trust in formal banking systems and offers a major boost to the country’s foreign exchange reserves. With consistent inflows and supportive monetary policies, remittances continue to serve as one of Bangladesh’s strongest economic lifelines.

To modernise the Bangladesh Air Force and strengthen national air defence, the government is preparing to buy 20 Chinese-made J-10CE multirole fighter jets at an estimated cost of $2.20 billion (around Tk27,060 crore) by 2027. The deal, which covers procurement, training, maintenance, and associated expenses, is expected to be executed during FY26 and FY27, either through a direct purchase or a government-to-government arrangement. Payments would be spread across 10 fiscal years, up to FY2035-36, according to official documents reviewed by The Business Standard.
The J-10CE is the export variant of China's J-10C, already in service with the Chinese air force. It recently drew global attention after reports claimed it had downed, possibly several, French-made Rafale of the Indian Airforce during the India-Pakistan clashes of May 2025- an incident yet to be independently verified. The Chief Adviser's Office has estimated the base price of each aircraft at $60 million, or $1.2 billion (Tk14,760 crore) for the fleet. Training, equipment, and freight add another $820 million (Tk10,086 crore). With insurance, VAT, agency commissions, civil works, and ancillary costs, the total climbs to $2.20 billion.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have launched a sweeping crackdown on cosmetic surgery, with officials reportedly ordered to identify women suspected of undergoing breast enhancement procedures. The surgeries, considered "anti-socialist" and "bourgeois," are officially banned in the country's medical institutions.
The directive comes after a high-profile show trial involving two women in their 20s, accused of having breast implants through an unlicensed backstreet surgeon. Residents of Sariwon, a city south of Pyongyang, were told that neighbourhood watch leaders must now flag women who appear to have had surgery, after which they would be taken to hospitals for medical checks.
During the trial, prosecutors accused the women of indulging in "rotten capitalist behaviour" while living in a socialist system. Surgical equipment, silicone allegedly imported from China, and bundles of seized cash were displayed as evidence. The procedures were reportedly carried out by a former medical student, who was caught by undercover officers posing as patients.
Eyewitnesses told South Korea-based outlet Daily NK that the defendants and the accused doctor were paraded on an open stage before a large crowd, where a judge denounced breast augmentation as an "un-socialist act." The women admitted they had undergone the procedures because they "wanted to improve their bodies."

Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia have signed a landmark agreement to formally expand the recruitment of general and skilled workers from Bangladesh, marking a historic milestone in their 50-year diplomatic relationship.
The deal was signed in Riyadh by Dr Asif Nazrul, adviser to the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Eng Ahmad bin Sulaiman Al-Rajhi, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Human Resources and Social Development.
This is the first formal agreement covering general worker recruitment since the two countries established diplomatic ties. It aims to strengthen labour cooperation while ensuring greater protection of workers’ rights and employer responsibilities.
Although Saudi Arabia began hiring Bangladeshi workers informally in 1976, previous formal agreements were limited to domestic workers (2015) and skills verification (2022).
Prior to the signing, a bilateral meeting was held where Adviser Asif Nazrul raised key issues, including transparency in recruitment contracts, employer accountability for iqama renewals, and faster processing of exit visas for workers wishing to return home.
