২০২৩ সালের ১৭ মার্চ রাতে ঢাকার মিরপুরের রাজপথে সুমন নামে এক যুবককে নির্মমভাবে হামলা চালিয়ে হত্যা করা হয়। খবরে বলা হয়েছে, সুমন ও তার স্ত্রী হেঁটে যাচ্ছিলেন, এমন সময় হঠাৎ একটি গাড়ির ভেতর থেকে একদল লোক এসে সুমনকে গাড়ি দিয়ে ধাক্কা মারে, ফলে সে মাটিতে পড়ে যায়। এরপর হামলাকারীরা গাড়ি থেকে নেমে সুমনকে লাঠি ও লোহার রড দিয়ে বেধড়ক মারধর করে যতক্ষণ না সে অজ্ঞান হয়ে যায়। তড়িঘড়ি তাকে নিকটস্থ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়া হলে চিকিৎসকরা তাকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।

ঘটনাটি পুরো ঢাকা শহর জুড়ে শোক এবং নৃশংস হামলায় মানুষ ক্ষুব্ধ। অনেক সংগঠন ও ব্যক্তি এ হামলার নিন্দা ও দোষীদের বিচারের দাবিতে এগিয়ে এসেছে। সুমনের বিচারের দাবিতে এবং নগরীতে সহিংসতার বিষয়ে সচেতনতা বাড়াতে শহরের বিভিন্ন স্থানে বিক্ষোভ ও সমাবেশের আয়োজন করা হয়েছে।
