BNP Youth Wing Leader Involved in Brutal Murder of Scrap Dealer in Dhaka

Md. Sohag (43), a scrap dealer, was brutally killed in front of Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in Dhaka. Eyewitnesses and locals confirmed that Moin, a candidate for General Secretary of the Chawkbazar unit of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, led the fatal attack. For the past few months, Moin had been extorting money from Sohag. When Sohag refused to pay, Moin threatened him. On the evening of the incident, Moin and 4–5 accomplices ambushed Sohag, stripped him, and beat him to death with stones. Terrified by Moin’s political backing, no one dared to intervene. Moin is also known for extorting footpath vendors and chemical traders near Mitford Hospital and allegedly took bribes for arranging low-grade hospital jobs. Sohag died on the spot, and the attackers fled the scene.

On July 18, in remembrance of the July Movement, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has instructed mobile operators to provide 1 GB of free internet to users, valid for five days. The directive, approved on July 8, aims to promote digital freedom as per the guidance of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. Operators have also been asked to inform users via SMS. While operators like Banglalink expressed interest, concerns remain over tax and operational costs associated with free data. Some operators urged BTRC to clarify if the free data will be tax-exempt and whether other stakeholders will share implementation costs. Notably, on the same date last year, the government had imposed an internet blackout during anti-quota protests.

Dr. Azizul Islam, Associate Professor of the Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Department at Islamic University (IU), has been accused of sexually harassing multiple female students. At least 12 students submitted a written complaint stating that he made obscene video calls via IMO, sent inappropriate messages, made vulgar comments in class, and body-shamed students. One student reported that he called to see if she had become fat or thin. Other allegations include pressuring students in projects, threatening academic results, and asking personal questions in his office. Dr. Azizul Islam denied the allegations, calling them a conspiracy. However, the department head confirmed that initial investigations found the complaints to be credible, and the professor has been temporarily suspended from all academic activities.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) today kicked off its July March across all 64 districts, beginning with a powerful moment of emotion and symbolism.

At the launch, the mother of Shaheed Abu Sayeed — a martyr of the July Uprising — gently placed her hand on the head of Nahid Islam, the youth leader who first declared the one-point demand during last year’s protests. Her silent prayer and encouragement marked the beginning of the movement’s next chapter.

> “This march begins with a mother’s blessing, and it will reach every village, town, and doorstep,” said NCP organizers.

The march aims to carry the spirit of July, honor the sacrifices of martyrs, and listen to the voices of citizens nationwide.

Last July, a moment of humanity stood out amid the chaos — when NSU faculty members stepped onto the streets, not with slogans, but with solidarity. They shielded their students from harm and extended water bottles to the police, not out of fear, but in a quiet plea for understanding. It was a gesture that spoke volumes: these students were not threats, but voices of a generation demanding justice. In that moment, compassion became resistance, and dignity stood taller than fear.

Iran claims that the three nuclear sites targeted by U.S. airstrikes did not contain any radioactive materials. Citing Iranian state media and officials, Al Jazeera reported that enriched uranium or radioactive elements were likely removed before the attacks. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have tightened public restrictions nationwide, possibly anticipating an Iranian retaliation. The situation follows rising tensions between Iran, Israel, and U.S. involvement in the region.

The GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), in the recent airstrike on Iran’s Fordo nuclear site. Weighing about 30,000 pounds, this bunker-busting bomb is specifically designed to destroy deeply buried and heavily fortified underground facilities like Fordo’s uranium enrichment tunnels.

Equipped with over 5,300 pounds of high explosives, the MOP can pe*****te more than 200 feet of reinforced concrete or 60 feet of solid rock before detonating, causing devastating shockwaves to collapse tunnels and disable critical infrastructure. Only stealth bombers such as the B-2 Spirit are capable of carrying and delivering this massive weapon with precision.

Experts say the use of the MOP highlights the U.S.’s focus on surgical strikes that avoid nuclear escalation while still targeting sensitive sites. Its deployment from Guam-based B-2 bombers marks a significant military escalation in the region and underscores the strategic importance of crippling Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

The government of Bangladesh has decided to declare 5 August as Student-People Uprising Day, marking the mass student-led movement that led to the fall of the previous regime. This was announced by Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki at a press conference in Dhaka on 19 June 2025. The day commemorates the historic uprising that began in July 2024, demanding job quota reforms, and escalated into a nationwide movement despite heavy crackdowns. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country on 5 August 2024 amid the protests. The final decision to make it a public holiday awaits approval from the Advisory Council.

In Sylhet’s Bholaganj, Jaflong, and nearby areas, massive illegal stone extraction is taking place openly, reportedly backed by BNP leaders since August 2024 after the fall of the previous government. Despite a 2020 ban, thousands continue extracting stones day and night due to administrative inaction. Locals estimate over Tk 2,000 crore worth of stones have been looted in the past 10 months alone, far exceeding the total of the last 15 years. Iconic spots like the White Stone tourist area have lost their charm. Although some machines had power cut off, the looting largely continues due to weak enforcement and political backing.
