One of my top 3 sheek kababs in Dhaka!
📍Manzar Kabab

Address- 50/B Zakir Hossain Road, Mohammadpur. Dhaka 1207

Time 5pm-11pm

Total bill at restaurant- BDT 1070

Picture of menus with prices attached at the end.

Such an amazing place for kebabs but it still feels underrated all these years later. This place serves some lip smacking beef items and exceptional beef sheek. The kitchen is open and you can see inside. Keep in mind there are only two small tables to sit at and very long lines. Most people prefer takeaway or eat standing. Also, they have catering services which we have used at family events in case you’re looking for that.

Things I have tried:
Beef sheek kabab BDT 190
Chicken reshmi kabab BDT 150
Chicken hariyali kabab BDT 150
Beef jhaal chaap BDT 250
Beef jhura BDT 250
Reshmi khichuri BDT 160
Beef gosh nehari BDT 250
Beef kabab roll (forgot to take picture and couldn’t find price on menu)
Parata BDT 20

Avoid chicken, go for beef anything that I tried here. Chicken kababs tasted underwhelming with no distinctive flavours. On the contrary, every beef item had prominent flavours. Beef sheek was melt in mouth and so delicious, couldn’t get enough! Beef kabab roll is made using same kabab and their parata with additional onion and chilli. One roll will make you absolutely full because their paratas are gigantic.

While beef jhura was perfect, beef jhaal chaap didn’t seem like it was lightly fried before being cooked in gravy (it’s tasted like a delicious beef gravy though). Reshmi khichuri was jhura beef mixed with rice, very thick and rich, felt more like jhura than khichuri but tasted good. Done expect typical khichuri, I didn’t notice any daal though. Gosh nehari was fantastic! I’m not easily impressed by nehari as most places serve watered down, bland ones but this was thick and flavour packed. I’ll highly recommend the beef items mentioned if you’re confused on what to try at Manzaar.

Time 5pm-11pm

Pora ruti with malai cha is a popular traditional duo in the food scene of Kushtia. It has found its way to the streets of Dhaka and went viral this past year. Since I’m not a fan of either of these I didn’t bother trying before but my apu took me there and said it’s a must try. Btw, they have both stool seating on footpath and takeaway options.

পোড়া রুটি- BDT 40
মালাই চা- BDT 30

The bread had a smoky, firm exterior from the toasting over fire and a soft interior. It was brushed with milk, honey and ghee giving it a sweet and fragrant flavour. Pairs perfectly with the thick, heavy malai cha. It’s a very rich combo, will be an excellent snack for winter because I started breaking a sweat after having it. Recommended!

A hidden gem at Mohammadpur
📍Rahim Kebab

Address- Gajnabi Road, outside Jeneva Camp Bazar, Mohammadpur, Dhaka (next to Mostakim varieties Kabab And soup).

Time 4:30pm-11:45pm

Mostakim has been one of my go to places during childhood for chaap luchi but it’s not been the same for a while. Haven’t been to other places next to Mostakim before now but I’m glad I finally did. Even though I haven’t heard about Rahim Kebab before, Riz Talks highly recommended it and took me there, won’t lie I was pleasantly surprised.

The owner himself cooks at the restaurant. Everything is made infront of the stall- from luchi to chaap, kababs, salad, you can see it all live. The restaurant is two storied and has a decent amount of seating.

Everything I tried:
মগজ ফ্রাই- BDT 160
গুরদা কাবাব - BDT 200
গরুর চাপ - BDT 140
ক্ষিরী কাবাব - BDT 140
চিকেন ফ্রাই (broiler)- BDT 130
লুচি - BDT 5
সালাদ

My favourites were gorur chaap, mogoj fry and salad. Chaap was really good, soft, fresh and well seasoned. Mogoj fry was a close second. Although gurda was good, I had better ones. Not a fan of khiri in general so it’s not something I should review. Chicken fry was very soft but seasoning could be better. Luchi were not coin sized like they were at Mostakim. The salad with broken kabab mixed in was top notch.

Overall a good experience. Recommended!

Testing OVERHYPED food places!
📍Nowshad Chicken Soup

Address- Masjid Market Complex, 10 Salimullah Road, Mohammadpur. Dhaka

Time 4:30pm-10pm

Soup season is coming, what better time to test out one of the most viral budget soup places in town? The place is tiny, has a small seating area in the back which was full but you can sit at the next door shop too (which is what we did) or stand and eat.

The soup itself was super thick (corn starch thick), has good amount of chicken and eggs. I did taste much flavour wise, adding the chilli sauce added some flavour and kick to it. Very underwhelming, not impressed!

Some friends who accompanied me liked it, the place also had a huge crowd but for me it’s hype!

Testing OVERHYPED food places!
📍 মনা মামা স‍্যুপ এন্ড হালিম

Address- Masjid Market Complex, 10 Salimullah Road, Mohammadpur. Dhaka

Time 4pm-11pm

I visited quite a few hyped places at Mohammadpur just recently and I am excited to give you all the tea on whether it’s just hype or the real deal. Firstly, I noticed that a few of these places don’t have sufficient seating and people just stand around and eat which is ofcourse inconvenient. Mona mama’s place has quite decent space to sit compared to some others.

The menu is quite small and simple. We took their infamous halim ofcourse but my local guide Riz Talks insisted that I try their soup so that I could compare it to the famous Nowshad Chicken Soup so I did. Things I tried here:

Vegetable soup- BDT 60
Beef halim- BDT 100
Wonton- BDT 20

The soup was fabulous and so was the halim! Starting with soup- good consistency, has chicken, egg, veggies, you can top it with chilli vinegar sauce for extra kick. Very flavourful, good quantity and quality of veg and protein. My local guide said they use seasonal veggies so it’s even better during winter. We took a wonton which is clearly massive, filling almost nonexistent but I didn’t mind it, it was for dipping purpose only.

Coming to the halim, wonderful use of spices, very flavourful but not overdone like a lot of places. Good amount of beef which was also solid pieces, addition of cucumber and koyel egg complimented the halim even more.

Overall an excellent experience and I can confirm it’s not fake hype. Highly recommended!

Visited here on a whim after dinner with friends to stretch the hangout longer over coffee and dessert. Even though a lot of the desserts and baked goods on the display looked tempting I had to refrain (my doctor asked me to loose weight the day before, as a professional fat person I’m sorry doctor 🙂).

Basque Cheesecake
Iced Caramel Latte

My friend specifically wanted to visit here to have their basque cheesecake. This Basque Cheesecake was paired with chocolate syrup, whipped cream and chocolate chips. You may also know it as Burnt Basque Cheesecake/San Sebastian Cheesecake, found at few other places and is on the expensive side everywhere. I had it before at Slaw Bistro but for almost 1k for a slice once was enough for me. This wasn’t cheap either by any means but still better price and I tried it once for the experience. I’ll definitely recommend it to anyone looking to try a Basque Cheesecake with chocolate syrup.

Cheesecake itself was creamy, dreamy and perfect. Adding the chocolate syrup might be bit much considering the richness, calories and sugar content but this wasn’t as overly thick and heavy as my previous experience at other places. So add a little and check if it’s to your liking instead of pouring the chocolate all at once.

Took an Iced Caramel Latte which was quite nice actually, not overly sweet or watery, quality syrup and good coffee.

They say they are trying to go for a fine dine theme I beg to differ but we’ll get to that later. Restaurant has an indoor and a huge outdoor area. To keep the outdoor less crowded, they have kept less tables, yet to install fans/coolers there as they’re new, outdoor might get uncomfortable on a hot day.

We took two meals, wanted to take a starter but didn’t really like the options so skipped that.

Baked Chicken Roulade- Comes with 4 pieces of Chicken Roulade, salad and dressing, mashed potatoes and a mushroom sauce. Taste wise no complaints but the quantity was very poor.

Baked Chicken Quinoa Rice- Comes with quarter chicken, quinoa, salad and sauce. Chicken was super soft, quinoa and salad were good but the sauce was a bit too sweet for my friend’s liking. But overall a good meal, portion and price are better than the other meal too.

Now coming back to going for fine dine vibe, this place doesn’t possess any fine dine qualities. Fine dine restaurants have very specific factors that must be implemented to qualify in that category and this place doesn’t qualify. This place might be categorised as a continental restaurant. It angers me when restaurants call themselves fine dine without even knowing what makes a fine dine a fine dine. You feel me?

Anyways, the place has potential- excellent location, perfect for date night. They just need to stop serving small portions in the name of fine dine.
