The University Grants Commission (UGC) is preparing a policy framework to allow students in Bangladesh to study simultaneously at local and foreign universities and earn separate degrees from both institutions.

The proposed plan includes a โ€œ2+2โ€ model, where students would spend two years at a Bangladeshi university and two years at an overseas partner institution.

The initiative also aims to expand dual-degree and joint-degree programmes, student and faculty exchanges, and collaborative research with international universities.

The framework is being developed with support from representatives of the UGC, universities, the US Embassy, the British High Commission, and the British Council.

My connection with Harvard University has always been deeply intertwined with the values instilled in me by my familyโ€”values that urge one to strive for excellence, pursue meaningful goals, and build a legacy beyond personal achievement. For me, it became a beacon to inspire me to think how I could give back to society, my community and add value to the academic world surrounding me. I believe a university is not just a place to learn. It is a sanctuary where ideas are honed, leaders are made, and purpose is re-established. It is where people hone their minds, expand their horizons, and equip themselves to leave a lasting mark on the world.

In February 2025, I heard the news that gave me new hope for my ambitions: I had been accepted to the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR), one of the most prestigious student-led conferences in the world with an acceptance rate of only 2โ€“3 percent. This achievement was another milestone in my journey, as I had already participated in Harvard University National Model United Nations in 2021 - it was a testament to persistence, resilience and the courage to dream beyond limitations.

Yet, every success story has untold tales of disappointment. In 2023, I applied to HPAIR with great hopeโ€”received a rejection. Though heartbreaking at the time, that rejection became one of my greatest lessons. It compelled me to reflect, to re-think, reassess, to identify areas where I could do better. At that period, I realize rejection is not the end of the queue; itโ€™s often a direction pointing toward growth.

HPAIR provided me with an extraordinary opportunity to engage with brilliant delegates from diverse corners of the world. I was inspired by their determination, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to personal development. Many had already begun equipping themselves with the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive and interconnected world. Their passion reminded me that excellence is not a destination but a continuous journey of learning and self-improvement.

As a graduate of ULAB School of Business I want to share this lesson with my juniors and peers: take rejection with dignity. Donโ€™t be disappointed, use it as a chance to learn where you are lacking, to sharpen your strengths, and to prepare yourself for the next challenge. Each closed door has the potential to redirect us to a better path.

Looking back to my HPAIR odyssey, I realize that Harvard taught me lessons that extend far beyond academics. It taught me the importance of reinventionโ€”the courage to evolve with every experience, every challenge, and every setback. It taught me humility in moments of success and empathy in a world increasingly marked by uncertainty and division. Most importantly, it taught me that meaningful impact begins with a willingness to grow, serve, and inspire others.

Making a first impression is important, but what happens if you leave a second, third or even a fourth impression from the first visit? With a great websites this will happen everyday. The Internet has provided the capability for a deeper and richer view of you, so you have to prepare for this when building your website. Itโ€™s no longer about putting up a website thatโ€™s good enough, because everyone in our digital age is smarter than that now. You have to step it up a notch or two if youโ€™re serious!

Communicating with your website is really an attempt to persuade the visitor to choose you and your products over your competitors. But how do you do that? Lets take a look at what makes communication successful and see if you can apply some of the characteristics to your website.

1. The Big Idea
This is more about you and your vision for the website and your products. Communication, to be highly successful, must have a big idea. Apple has it! Google has it! Look around your home or office and the things you surround yourself with are generally connected to a big idea someone had. You bought into the idea and purchased it. Was it a need for the product or did you buy it because you just wanted it? Your website home page should tell a great story of what your customer is about to see when they dig a little deeper.

2. The Engine
How it gets me there. Explaining or telling the story of how and why the products you sell are what I need is the nuts and bolts of great communication. Tell me why I need it and show me some examples, please! Do your website and products answer the big questions I have?

3. Entertainment
This is where your website becomes about me and not you. This is where your writing style, your images, your videos, your graphics, etc., persuade me to choose you. Try to think of your customers like a Border Collie. A Border Collie needs to be stimulated and entertained all the time because if you donโ€™t, theyโ€™re going to get bored and start chewing your shoes.

4. Hope
Now that youโ€™ve entertained me with your big idea, you have to let me go out on my own and allow me the opportunity to decide why I can't live without your product. Your job is done and Iโ€™m left with the happiness that I donโ€™t have to search the Internet any further. You can rest assured that if youโ€™ve done your job, even though I may not make a purchase today, there's hope that Iโ€™ll come back tomorrow. Your message sunk in and I'm now a fan or a believer in you.

All of the above can happen very quickly because the Internet has made us impatient and intolerant of dullness.

In short, I need a big idea that entertains me. Does your website do that for me?

In the last two and a half months, we have been hit by the tragic reports of peers choosing to end their lives following the end of their romantic relationship.

The campus, rain slicked walkways, usually charged with the frantic pulse of the new semesterโ€”now a sense of heaviness in the air. Underneath the surface of all the fun and joy of uni lifeโ€”staying up late for projects, planning for a short-film, and drinking coffee togetherโ€” lies a silent, shadowed battle that often goes unspoken until it's too late.

โ€”Naveen Islam Toree, DEH, ULAB

For Kifayat Jahan Zerin, studying Literature and Cultural Studies is more than just an academic choice. It is deeply connected to experience, inspiration, and personal healing.

Her love for English began in school, where she found herself naturally drawn to grammar and literature. A strong bond with her English teacher, Rumena Rahman, also played an important role in shaping that interest. Another emotional connection came from her late sister, who was also majoring in English Literature before she passed away.

โ€œAll these connections created a deep emotional attachment to English as a subject,โ€ Zerin shares. โ€œThat eventually led me to study English Literature and Cultural Studies.โ€

However, her journey back to education was not simple. In 2022, Zerin was going through one of the most difficult phases of her life as her 13-and-a-half-year marriage was coming to an end. After spending years as a homemaker, many people advised her to start a small business or sell homemade food. But she wanted something different for herself.

She wanted to return to academia

For Zerin, the dream of wearing a black graduation gown had always lingered in the back of her mind. Returning to university after almost a decade was not only about getting a degree, but also about rebuilding herself with dignity and purpose.โ€œAt that time, the only thing on my mind was survival,โ€ she says. โ€œI wanted to somehow get through that phase and rebuild the strongest possible version of myself.โ€

Her dedication soon showed results.

As a merit scholarship awardee, Zerin believes consistency has been one of her biggest strengths. She has remained regular, attentive, and sincere in her studies, missing only three classes in four years due to emergencies. Along with class lectures and notes, she also reads extra materials and watches online lectures to strengthen her understanding.

ULAB has also changed the way she sees literature. For her, literature is no longer only about fictional stories. It is connected to real life, psychology, identity, gender, culture, and lived experiences. Studying Cultural Studies has helped her become more open-minded and aware of different perspectives.

Alongside being a student, Zerin also works as an online English tutor. Teaching has made her more patient, confident, and responsible. It has also reminded her that learning never really ends. Sometimes, when students ask questions she does not fully know, she takes it as a chance to grow.

Beyond her academic achievements, Zerin describes herself as a woman who does not give up. She is resilient, determined, and deeply committed to becoming stronger. Bodybuilding has also become an important part of her life, helping her grow both physically and mentally. Most importantly, she is the mother of a ten-year-old boy, and she hopes to be both his inspiration and protector.

Looking back, Zerin believes that pain can sometimes become the beginning of transformation. Signing her university admission papers during such a major life change was not easy, but it became a powerful step towards a new version of herself.

Her message to other women, especially those suffering in silence, is simple but strong: do not lose faith in your own worth.

โ€œEven if you feel broken, trapped, or alone right now, your life still matters and your future is still yours,โ€ she says.

For readers of ULAB Insider, Zerin leaves behind a reminder that life does not always move in a straight line. Some people begin late, some begin again, and some begin after breaking. But that does not make their journey any less meaningful.

โ€œNever underestimate what consistency, courage, and self-belief can do,โ€ she says. โ€œEven in your hardest phase, a new chapter may already be waiting for you.โ€
