One galaxy. Two radically different visions of reality.
Through the Hubble Space Telescope, the Whirlpool Galaxy appears as a majestic masterpiece of glowing spiral arms, sparkling star clusters, and sweeping pink nebulae stretching across millions of light-years. It is the universe as we once knew it, beautiful and familiar.
Then the James Webb Space Telescope turns its powerful infrared gaze upon the same object. Piercing straight through veils of cosmic dust, it unveils a hidden realm beneath the surface: a turbulent tapestry of glowing gas, dramatic structures, and countless invisible stellar nurseries where new stars ignite in fiery bursts.
This is M51, the legendary Whirlpool Galaxy, lying nearly 31 million light-years from Earth. These are not two separate objects, but the same cosmic wonder seen in two profoundly different ways.
Hubble captures the galaxy in visible light. Webb reveals its true underlying architecture, the secret machinery of creation itself.
For the first time, humanity is peering beyond the obscuring dust to witness the universe as it really is. Credit: NASA
