Mahreen Chowdhury, a 42-year-old teacher at Milestone School in Uttara, has become a symbol of bravery after the recent tragic plane crash. Despite suffering severe burns, she risked her life to save children near the school gate when the training aircraft crashed and ignited a massive fire. With 80% of her body burned, she is now on life support at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit, fighting for survival. Before being placed on life support, Mahreen told her husband that she was escorting children out of the school when the plane hit, and despite her injuries, she tried to protect them. Her family, colleagues, and students are praying for her recovery, hailing her as a true hero.

পুরান ঢাকার এক সাধারণ ব্যবসায়ী। রাজনীতি করতেন না, পরিচিত ছিলেন একজন পরিশ্রমী মানুষ হিসেবে। কিন্তু তার অপরাধ? শুধু এই যে, তিনি চাঁদা দেননি। আর সেই ‘অপরাধেই’ তাকে প্রকাশ্যে খুন করা হলো।

মানুষের সামনে, দিনের আলোয়, রাস্তায়। খুন করার পর তার নিথর দেহের উপর উঠে ঘৃণার এক নৃত্য পরিবেশন করল খুনি। কেউ এগিয়ে আসেনি। সাহস করেনি। কারণ, অভিযুক্ত ব্যক্তি একজন প্রভাবশালী যুবদল নেতার পদপ্রার্থী।

এই লজ্জা কার? রাষ্ট্রের? নাকি আমাদের সবার?

একজন মানুষকে খুন করে, তার লাশের উপর দাঁড়িয়ে নাচে যাদের মন গলে না—তারা মানুষ না, তারা সমাজের ভয়ংকরতম বিকৃতি।

ডিএমপির একজন অতিরিক্ত কমিশনার বলেছেন, “যা হয়েছে, তা চিন্তার বাইরে।” কিন্তু আমরা কি আর চিন্তা করি? না হয় ভাবনার ক্ষমতা হারিয়েছি অনেক আগেই?

এই বাংলাদেশ কি আমরা চেয়েছিলাম? যেখানে রাজনৈতিক পরিচয় বর্ম হয়ে দাঁড়ায়, আর ন্যায়ের কণ্ঠ রুদ্ধ হয়ে যায় ভয় আর নির্লজ্জ নিরবতায়?

আজকে, ৫ আগস্টের পর ‘দেশের মালিক’ হয়ে ওঠা এক রাজনৈতিক গোষ্ঠীর কাছে মাথা না ঝোকানোর দায়ে একজন সাধারণ মানুষকে প্রকাশ্যে হত্যা করা হয়।

নতুন দিনের স্বপ্ন আমরা দেখি ঠিকই, নতুন সংবিধানের কথা বলি, ‘হাসিনা মুক্ত’ আর ‘আওয়ামী লীগ মুক্ত’ বাংলাদেশ গড়ার কথা বলি। কিন্তু এই বাংলাদেশে যদি চাঁদা না দিলেই জীবন কেড়ে নেওয়া হয়, তাহলে সেই স্বপ্ন শুধু ধোঁয়া হয়ে মিলিয়ে যায়।

সবাই চুপ। কেউ কিছু বলে না। কেউ প্রতিবাদ করে না। শুধু একটা লাশ পড়ে থাকে রাস্তায়, আর আমরা মুখ ফিরিয়ে নেই।

এই নীরবতা, এই লজ্জা কোথায় রাখি?
