Is the AI Boom Straining the Power Grid? Maine Moves Toward Major Data Center Decision
The U.S. state of Maine is moving closer to a temporary pause on new data center construction. Lawmakers have approved a proposal that would halt new projects until November 2027 in order to study the impact of rapidly growing data centers on the state’s energy infrastructure.
Supporters say Maine already has some of the highest electricity costs in the country, and the massive energy demand from large data centers could further increase bills for residents. During the pause, a special council would review how future data center development can be managed while maintaining grid stability and affordability.
However, critics from the tech industry argue that the decision could discourage investment and slow down opportunities tied to AI and digital growth. The final decision now rests with the governor.
