What appears to the naked eye as ordinary grains of salt looks surprisingly different when viewed at high magnification.

Under a microscope, sodium chloride reveals its distinctive crystal pattern, most often appearing in the form of tiny cubes with smooth, flat surfaces and edges that meet at nearly perfect right angles. This geometric structure results from the highly organized arrangement of sodium and chloride ions within the crystal.

Not every grain looks perfectly formed, however. Some salt particles may be broken, chipped, or uneven in shape. Even so, microscopic observation makes the familiar cubic structure of sodium chloride far more visible.

Changes in electrolyte levels can affect the heart’s electrical conduction and produce characteristic patterns on an ECG.

Low potassium levels, known as hypokalemia, may lead to flattened T waves, noticeable U waves, and a longer QU interval. In contrast, hyperkalemia, or elevated potassium, is commonly associated with tall, peaked T waves.

Calcium abnormalities can also alter cardiac timing. Hypocalcemia generally causes QT interval prolongation, whereas hypercalcemia is more likely to result in a shortened QT interval.

Speed is essential for some of the ocean’s most powerful predators, and several fish are capable of moving through the water at astonishing rates.

Leading the group is the Indo-Pacific sailfish, which can reach speeds of around 110 km/h. Close behind are the black marlin at approximately 105 km/h and the swordfish, which can reach nearly 97 km/h. The wahoo is also an exceptionally fast swimmer, capable of reaching about 78 km/h, while yellowfin tuna can approach 75 km/h.

These remarkable speeds are possible because of their highly adapted body designs. Their streamlined shapes reduce resistance in the water, while strong tails and powerful, efficient muscles generate the force needed for rapid movement.

Together, these adaptations allow them to accelerate quickly and race through the open ocean, especially when chasing prey.

Tire tread patterns are specifically designed to perform under different road and weather conditions.

Summer tires use specialized tread designs and rubber compounds to provide strong traction and handling on warm, dry, and wet pavement. All-season tires are designed as a compromise, offering balanced performance across a wider range of temperatures and everyday driving conditions.

Winter tires use deeper grooves and numerous small cuts called sipes to improve traction on snow, ice, and cold roads. All-terrain tires take a different approach, using larger, more rugged tread blocks that provide better grip across pavement, gravel, dirt, and light off-road surfaces.

The tread may look like a simple pattern, but every groove, channel, and block serves a purpose—helping the tire maintain contact with the road under specific driving conditions.

Not every food belongs in the refrigerator. Some ingredients can actually lose flavor, texture, or overall quality when exposed to cold temperatures.

Potatoes can develop a sweeter taste and altered texture, while tomatoes may lose some of their fresh flavor. Onions and garlic can become soft or spoil more quickly in humid refrigerator conditions. Bananas and avocados may also ripen unevenly or develop an undesirable texture when kept too cold.

Bread is another common example—it can become stale more quickly in the refrigerator. Honey may crystallize, coffee can absorb unwanted odors from surrounding foods, basil can wilt or suffer cold damage, and whole melons may lose some of their flavor. Olive oil can also become cloudy when chilled, although this does not necessarily mean it has spoiled.

For many of these foods, a cool, dry, well-ventilated place outside the refrigerator is a better storage environment, helping preserve their natural flavor and texture for longer.

Earth's continents have never been fixed in place. For hundreds of millions of years, they have been slowly moving, colliding, separating, and reshaping the planet's surface.

Around 200 million years ago, most of Earth's land was joined together in a massive supercontinent called Pangaea. Over millions of years, tectonic forces gradually broke it apart, sending fragments in different directions and opening new oceans between them.

During the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, these movements continued to reshape the planet, creating new coastlines, deep ocean basins, and enormous mountain ranges as tectonic plates collided and separated.

And the process has never stopped. Continents are still drifting today, generally at speeds comparable to the growth of human fingernails. Millions of years from now, the arrangement of Earth's continents will look dramatically different from the world map we know today.
