How to Use Merit — According to the Buddha’s Teaching
From the teachings of Luang Por Dhamma
In the Buddha’s teachings, it is clearly shown that
the mind is the foundation of all things.
When the mind is pure, life flows peacefully.
When the mind is clouded, suffering follows.
The Buddha taught:
> “Mano pubbaṅgamā dhammā”
All phenomena are preceded by the mind.
The mind is their master.
Everything is shaped by the mind.
Our mind is like a “creative element” — a force that attracts and connects with whatever it focuses on.
Even just remembering or thinking about something can bring it back into our experience.
Luang Por Dhamma explained this beautifully:
> “The mind is a creative force. When we think about someone who made us feel upset,
even if they don’t know and the event happened long ago,
our senses reconnect with that memory, pulling in the emotion,
and we become disturbed again.”
Merit works in the same way.
If we frequently recall the merit we have done — even if it happened long ago,
even if we don’t remember the details, whether in past lives or this one —
our mind connects with it.
It links all the merits together, even the most recent ones,
and they come together to form a bright, pure sphere of merit
that gathers at the center of the body — the seventh base,
right at the center of our abdomen.
This is the true “Way to Use Merit.”
Merit is not something that disappears after we do it.
It is a living energy, a spiritual resource we can reconnect with —
if we know how.
By keeping the mind still, centered, and recalling our good deeds with a clear and gentle heart,
all the merit we’ve ever made will unite into a pure, uplifting force.
This energy supports happiness, success, and spiritual progress.
In today’s world — full of stress, conflict, war, and emotional instability —
knowing how to use merit is like finding a clear spring in the desert.
It brings us back into balance,
restores peace to our hearts,
and offers a quiet strength to help guide others.
Through the wisdom of the Buddha
and the insightful teachings of Luang Por Dhamma,
we are reminded that the greatest refuge lies within —
in the still, bright, and awakened mind.
