চার্লস বুকোস্কি ১৯২০ সালের ১৬ আগস্ট জার্মানিতে জন্মেছিলে, আর বড় হয়েছেন আমেরিকায়। ছিলেন এক অদ্ভুত মানুষ, নিজের খেয়াল খুশি মত চলা মানুষ। একবার তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করা হলো, লেখক হিসেবে সাফল্যের ক্রেডিট কাকে দেবেন? তিনি বললেন, “নৃশংস শৈশব, ম*দ, অর্ধডজন বাজে চাকরি, নারীপ্রেম, প্রায় সব কিছুর প্রতি ভয়, হঠাৎ পাওয়া ভাগ্য আর ঠান্ডা মাথায় বিপদে দাঁড়ানো।”

আমি যখন বুকোস্কিকে ভাবি, দেখি বেপরোয়া এক লেখক, টাইপরাইটারে ধপাধপ চাপ দিচ্ছেন, ঠোঁটে সিগারেট ঝুলছে। Inspiration বা muse নিয়ে তার বাড়াবাড়ি ছিল না। যারা তার লেখা পড়েছেন জানেন নিশ্চয় বেশিরভাগই autobiographical। Henry Chinaski ছিল তার alter-ego। জীবনকে তিনি এমনভাবে যাপন করতেন যেন সেটাই শিল্প, পরে সেই জীবনকেই কবিতা ও গদ্যে ধরে ফেলতেন।

তিনি বলেছিলেন, “যদি সব পরিস্থিতিতে লিখতে না পারো, তবে তুমি যথেষ্ট ভালো লেখক বাঃ কবি নও।” নতুন লেখকদের জন্য পরামর্শ ছিল, “লেখালেখির ক্লাস থেকে দূরে থাকো, তার থেকে চারপাশে কী হচ্ছে তা খেয়াল করো।" বুকোস্কি আমাকে শিখিয়েছে - সহজ রাখো, স্বাভাবিক রাখো। তার ভাষায়, “প্রতিভা হলো গভীর কিছু সহজভাবে বলা।”

এক সাক্ষাৎকারে জিজ্ঞেস করা হয়েছিল, কোনো regret আছে কি না তার জীবনে। Bukowski বলেছিলেন, “না, বিশেষ করে আমার জীবনযাপনের ধরন নিয়ে কোন রিগ্রেট আমার নাই । বরং জীবন হলো এক wide-open gamble। আমি দশ বছর লেখালেখি ছেড়ে দিয়েছিলাম, কাটিয়েছি কঠিন দশ বছর- যেখানে শুধু ম*দ, হাসপাতাল, জেল, নারী, বাজে চাকরি, আর পাগলামি। এখনো কোনো রাতের ঘটনা মনে পড়লেই সাথে সাথে লিখি।” তার মতে, “The writing’s easy, it’s the living that’s sometimes difficult।”

মৃত্যু নিয়েও তার ভাবনা ছিল সোজাসাপ্টা—“যত বেশি বছর বাঁচো, তত বেশি জিনিস রিপিট হয়। তখন মৃত্যু এসে ডাকলে মনে হয়—ঠিক আছে বেবি, সময় হয়ে গেছে।”

শেষে তার একটি লাইন, “If you write dull s**t it doesn’t matter what you die from…”

সব তিক্ততা, বিদ্রুপ আর দুঃখের নিচে একটা পাখি আছে যে শান্ত ও অদৃশ্য, দিনের বেলায় চুপ থাকে, কিন্তু রাতের শেষ প্রহরে ধোঁয়ার ফাঁকে বলে, আমি এখনো উড়তে পারি এবং আমি উড়বও-ই একদিন, সেই নীল পাখির ডানায়।

✨ A Tribute to Arnob ✨
20 years ago, in June 2005, Arnob released his iconic debut album under Ektaar Music — a record that reshaped the sound of Bangladeshi music. This tribute celebrates “Chaina Bhabish” — one of the most soulful tracks from the album, mixed, mastered, and engineered by Arnob himself.

His music spoke to a generation, and two decades later, it still does.
This is my humble way of saying thank you to an artist who changed everything.
