Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977) was a prominent Indian spiritual leader, scholar, and the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Early Life and Background
Born as Abhay Charan De in Kolkata, India, Srila Prabhupada was deeply influenced by his devout Vaishnava parents and his guru, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who instructed him to spread the message of Lord Krishna in the English-speaking world.
Mission in the West
In 1965, at the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada sailed to the United States aboard a cargo ship, the Jaladuta, carrying only a few possessions and the desire to fulfill his spiritual master's mission.
Despite initial hardships, he founded ISKCON in New
York City in 1966. His teachings centered around the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.
Global Impact
Under his leadership, ISKCON grew into a global movement with over 100 temples, farms, schools, and vegetarian restaurants. Srila Prabhupada also initiated thousands of disciples and personally translated and wrote purports for over 60 volumes of Vedic scriptures, making complex spiritual wisdom accessible to a worldwide audience.

Srila Prabhupada is revered not only for his scholarship but also for his spiritual purity, compassion, and unwavering dedication. His books, such as Bhagavad-gita As It Is, The Science of Self-Realization, and Srimad Bhagavatam, continue to inspire millions around the world.
