Likes aren't engagement.
Neither are hearts, claps, or "fire" emojis.
Those are just clicks. Low-friction signals that cost someone nothing.
Real engagement? That happens when a person stops, thinks, and chooses to respond. Not because they have to. Because something you wrote actually landed.
I've managed communities where comments were low but sales were steady. And accounts with hundreds of replies that led nowhere.
Here's what I've learned over the years:
· Real engagement leaves a mark. Someone screenshots your post. Sends it to a colleague. Brings it up in a meeting days later. You never see those metrics in a dashboard.
· Most prompts are lazy. "Thoughts?" isn't a conversation starter. It's a conversation killer. People engage when you say something worth pushing back on.
· Silence isn't failure. Sometimes the right post makes people sit with an idea. That's deeper work than a quick clap emoji.
The best strategists I know don't obsess over reply counts. They ask a harder question:
Did anyone think differently after reading this?
If the answer is yes, you won engagement. Even if the comments say otherwise.
What's the most meaningful reaction you've ever received on a post? Not a like—something that actually stuck with you.
