The government plans to transform Rabindra University into a world-class institution, similar to Shanti Niketon or Bishwa Bharati, said Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud. Speaking after an ECNEC meeting, he noted that the project was returned for further planning. Rabindra University, located in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj, was established in 2018 and currently offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across five departments under four faculties. The university has over 2,000 students, 34 faculty members, and is housed in temporary campuses.

The government is acquiring 225 acres of Rabindranath Tagore's estate for the permanent campus, located in a scenic area at the confluence of three rivers. The plan includes water reservoirs, a Rabindra Museum, and a potential tourist attraction. Dr Mahmud stressed the need for a solid architectural plan to ensure the university meets world-class standards. He emphasised that Rabindra University will stand apart from local institutions, focusing on quality rather than profit.
