Muhammad bin Shammak (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I had a neighbor in the city of Kufa. One of his sons used to fast during the day and spend the night in worship and reciting meaningful poems. The son had become thin and emaciated. His father requested me to give him some advice. I was sitting at the door of the house once, and the son was going that way. I called him. He appeared and greeted me and sat down. As soon as I started speaking, the son said, "Uncle! It seems that you want to advise me to work less!" Uncle, I and some of the boys of this neighborhood came to this conclusion that let's see who among us can do the most worship and austerity. They have gone to the court of Allah after working hard. When their call came, they responded with great joy. I am the only one left among them. Twice a day, my deeds are presented to them. What will they say if I show a little slackness? They have gone through a hard struggle. The boy began to describe the Riyazat and Mujahadah of his companions. Hearing what I heard, I was shocked with amazement. Then the boy left. After three days, I heard that the boy had also left this world.
মোহাম্মদ বিন্ ছাম্মাক (রঃ) বলেনঃ কুফা নগরে আমার এক প্রতিবেশী ছিল। তাহার একটি ছেলে দিনে রোজা রাখিত ও রাত্রি বেলায় এবাদতে ও ভাবপূর্ণ কবিতা পাঠে রত থাকিত। ছেলেটি শুকাইয়া কঙ্কালসার হইয়া গিয়াছিল। তাহার বাবা ছেলেটিকে একটু উপদেশ দেওয়ার জন্য আমাকে অনুরোধ করিল। আমি এক সময় ঘরের দরওজায় বসা ছিলাম, ছেলেটি সেই পথে যাইতেছিল আমি তাহাকে ডাকিলাম। সে হাজির হইল ও
আমাকে সালাম করিয়া বসিয়া পড়িল। আমি কথা আরম্ভ করিতেই ছেলেটি বলিয়া উঠিল, চাচাজান! মনে হয় আপনি আমাকে পরিশ্রম কম করিবার পরামর্শ দিতে চান! চাচা আমি এই মহল্লার কয়েকটি ছেলের সহিত এই সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হই যে, দেখা যাক আমাদের মধ্যে কে অধিক এবাদত ও রিয়াজত করিতে পারে। তাহারা কঠোর সাধনা করিয়া আল্লাহর দরবারে চলিয়া গিয়াছে। যখন তাহাদের ডাক আসিয়াছিল তখন তাহারা অতি আনন্দের সহিত সাড়া দিয়াছিল। তাহাদের মধ্যে একমাত্র আমি বাকি রহিয়াছি। দৈনিক দুইবার হয়তঃ আমার আমল তাহাদের নিকট হাজির করা হয়, আমি যদি কিছুটা শৈথিল্য প্রদর্শন করি তবে তাহারা কি বলিবে? তাহারা কঠোর মুজাহাদা করিয়া গিয়াছে। ছেলেটি তাহার সঙ্গীদের রিয়াজত ও মুজাহাদার বর্ণনা দিতে লাগিল। যাহা শুনিয়া আমি বিস্ময়ে হতবাক হইয়া গেলাম। তারপর ছেলেটি চলিয়া গেল। তিনদিন পর শুনিলাম, সেই ছেলেটিও ইহলোক ত্যাগ করিয়া চলিয়া গিয়াছে।
