In 2014, a little boy named Jihad tragically fell into an abandoned 250-foot-deep pipe in Shahjahanpur. For nearly 23 hours, the Fire Service and a team of renowned engineers from BUET tried tirelessly to rescue him. They even lowered a high-resolution camera into the pipe and, after thorough inspection, concluded that the child was not inside, claiming instead that there were only cockroaches and lizards. Eventually, they suspended the rescue operation.
But do you know what happened next?
A group of young diploma engineers from Dhaka Polytechnic, reportedly Sujon, Moon, Bashir, Anwar, and some other volunteers, rushed to the spot. Within a short time, they designed and built a cage, like device. Using this improvised tool, they managed to pull Jihad out from the depth of 250 feet. Sadly, he could not be brought out alive.
The most striking part of the story is that these young diploma engineers had earlier requested permission to try. Yet, the Fire Service dismissed them, saying:
“If your seniors from BUET couldn’t do anything, what could you diploma engineers possibly achieve?”
The reality is different. If even a fraction, say 10%of the government’s investment behind BUET, RUET, CUET, and KUET were spent on developing diploma engineers, I swear by Allah, the diploma engineers of this country could achieve far more than anyone expect.
