Chittagong Port: The Maritime Gateway of Bangladesh

Chittagong Port, located on the southeastern coast of Bangladesh along the Bay of Bengal, is the country’s principal seaport and one of the busiest ports in South Asia. It handles over 90% of Bangladesh’s import and export trade, making it a vital economic lifeline.

The history of Chittagong Port dates back over a thousand years. In ancient times, it was known as “Samandar” and served as a major trading hub for Arab, Persian, and Chinese merchants. During the medieval period, it flourished under the Bengal Sultanate and later the Arakanese kingdom. The Portuguese established a trading post here in the 16th century, calling it "Porto Grande."

In 1666, the Mughal Empire took control and renamed it "Islamabad." Under British colonial rule, modern port infrastructure began to develop, with formal port administration established in 1887 and the port officially constituted in 1910.

After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the port was rehabilitated and further modernized. Today, it is managed by the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and includes container terminals, multipurpose berths, and anchorage areas. Projects like the Bay Terminal and automation systems are currently underway to expand capacity and improve efficiency.

Strategically located and economically essential, Chittagong Port continues to play a central role in Bangladesh's trade, regional connectivity, and economic growth.
