Walking toward the forest, the sun began to set
In this example, "walking toward the forest" is a dangling modifier because it sounds as if the sun is walking toward the forest.
Breathing heavily, the race was finished
In this example, it's unclear who was breathing heavily when they finished the race.
My brother had an old truck that sat by the garage that needed paint
In this example, the phrase "that needed paint" is a dangling modifier because it's unclear whether it's the truck or the garage that needed paint.
To correct a dangling modifier, you can introduce the subject right after the modifier or include it in the modifying phrase. For example, the correct version of "Walking toward the forest, the sun began to set" is "Walking toward the forest, I watched as the sun began to set".
To spot a dangling modifier, you can:
Look for an -ing modifier at the beginning of the sentence or another modifying phrase.
Underline the first noun that follows it.
Make sure the modifier and noun go together logically.
