A few students from the Commerce Department were traveling on a train, discussing marketing. An elderly gentleman sitting nearby was attentively listening to their conversation, smiling to himself.
Suddenly, the gentleman asked the students, "May I explain the concept of marketing in a few simple words?"
Curious, the students looked at him.
The gentleman began, "Imagine you attend a wedding reception and see an extraordinarily beautiful woman there.
If you go up to her and say, 'I am well-educated and wealthy. Will you marry me?'—this is called Direct Marketing.
If your friend goes to her, points at you, and says, 'He is well-educated and wealthy. Will you marry him?'—this is called Advertising.
If the woman herself walks up to you and says, 'You are well-educated and wealthy. Will you marry me?'—this is called Brand Value.
If you propose to her and she replies, 'I’m already married.'—this is called the Demand-Supply Gap.
If someone else proposes to her before you do, and she agrees to marry him—this is called Competition.
If she accepts your proposal, and within a year, you have a child—this is called Production.
If, as soon as you propose, she slaps you—this is called Customer Feedback.
If, at the moment you propose, your wife suddenly appears—this is called Risk of Entering a New Market."*
