The Scent of Ruin | S M Kayum

Touch arrives
— not the body.

At noon
the sun does not burn,
yet the shadow
leans and spills
into the hollow of the breast.

An echo returns
from pre-birth —
as thirst knows:
water
is only
a habit.

You do not look
yet
on the lens of the glasses accumulates
a flammable watermark —

Which was never read,
yet
each time it is read
on someone else’s lips.

On platform number three
a piece of paper stands —
not news,
but the old everydayness of memory.

The wind comes
rips history apart.
The words fly away!

What remains:

a little water,
some ribs,
a mistaken birth.

I
still
gather fallen frangipanis —
whose scent
no longer holds you.
