The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, has called Gaza “worse than hell on Earth” in a powerful BBC interview from Geneva. She says humanity is failing, as global powers do little to end the war, protect Palestinians, or secure the release of Israeli hostages.

With basic human dignity denied and the laws of war crumbling, Spoljaric warns the situation has crossed every legal, moral, and humanitarian line. The ICRC’s Rafah hospital, Gaza’s closest emergency facility to recent chaos, treated 184 casualties in one morning, with 27 deaths.

She stressed: “October 7 doesn’t justify this level of devastation.” Her message: No side is above international law, and the world must act.

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury clarified that individuals who are not staunch Awami League activists, but have a respectable social image, may be considered for BNP membership.

Speaking at a Chattogram BNP membership renewal event, Khosru emphasized excluding those linked to corruption, extortion, or who might harm the party's reputation. “We must be cautious. No die-hard AL men, but someone who once supported AL without harming BNP, if they are socially respected, can be welcomed,” he stated.

Parvez Hossain Emon lit up Sharjah with a fiery 54-ball century, Bangladesh’s fastest ever in T20Is, as the Tigers claimed a 27-run win over UAE in the series opener. Emon smashed 9 sixes (a new national record) and 5 fours in a sensational knock of 100, becoming only the second Bangladeshi to score a T20I century after Tamim Iqbal. Bangladesh posted 191–7, with sundries surprisingly second-highest at 21. UAE fought back through skipper Muhammad Waseem (54) and Asif Khan (42), but disciplined bowling from Hasan Mahmud (3–33) and others sealed the deal. Emon’s ton rewrote the record books and gave Bangladesh a flying start in the series.

Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has made it clear: illegal Indian entrants in Bangladesh will be repatriated legally, not pushed back. At the launch of a floating Border Outpost in Satkhira, he condemned India’s cross-border push-ins as unlawful, stressing that even if returnees are Bangladeshi, forced re-entry without procedure is unacceptable. Diplomatic channels are already in motion, with letters sent and talks held with top officials. BGB chief Major General Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui detailed ongoing push-ins in Sylhet, Kurigram, and the Hill Tracts, some as recent as today. While the vast border poses challenges, he affirmed BGB’s active response through flag meetings and community cooperation to curb these intrusions.

Students of Dhaka’s seven affiliated colleges have issued a bold 24-hour ultimatum, demanding the government immediately publish a gazette forming an interim administrative body for their long-promised new university. Speaking at an emergency press meet near Eden Mohila College, student leaders warned of tougher protests, including ministry gheraos, starting Monday (May 19) if their demands go unmet. The list includes a formal academic calendar, a halt to extra fees, and a date for the 2024–25 admission test. They’ve also set a deadline of June 16 for passing the university ordinance and called for budget allocations in FY2025, 26. “We want education, not street protests,” they said, stressing they won’t return to campuses without clear action from the authorities.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on the interim government to stop stalling and declare a definite date for the national election. Speaking virtually at the NDM’s anniversary event, he warned that delays are feeding political unrest and public distrust. Tarique slammed the government for “muddying the waters” with vague reforms, instead of fulfilling its mandate. He also strongly criticised the interim authority’s reported moves on a humanitarian corridor for Myanmar and foreign control of Chattogram Port, saying such major decisions must wait for an elected government. Highlighting the July movement’s sacrifices, he questioned why the government still hasn't confirmed the number of martyrs. His message was clear: act transparently, or risk losing the people's trust.

BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed has slammed the interim government for what he calls political bias, claiming it favours the National Citizen Party (NCP) by placing two of its known supporters in advisory roles. Speaking at a youth rally in Khulna, he urged their resignation to ensure neutrality. He also blasted Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for appointing a foreign national as Bangladesh’s national security adviser, calling it “senseless” and a risk to national sovereignty. Salahuddin warned the interim setup against overstaying its mandate, stressing its sole duty is to conduct fair elections by December. BNP’s youth wings gathered in large numbers, rallying for electoral reforms and voicing fears of growing influence over the caretaker administration.

India has blocked seven categories of Bangladeshi products like garments, fruits, and processed foods - from entering through land ports, allowing only Kolkata and Mumbai seaports instead. The move comes weeks after Bangladesh restricted yarn imports via land, prompting many to see India’s step as payback. Exporters warn this will raise costs and delay deliveries, especially for small businesses. Big brands like Pran-RFL fear major setbacks. Though India claims goods for Nepal and Bhutan won’t be affected, this tit-for-tat risks deeper disruption in bilateral trade. In FY24, Bangladesh’s imports from India stood at $9 billion, six times more than its exports. Industry leaders on both sides are urging calm heads and open talks to fix this fast.

After India called the Awami League ban a "concerning development," Bangladesh fired back, and didn’t hold back.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam declared that elections are Bangladesh’s internal matter, urging India and others to respect the will of its people.

He accused AL of 15 years of tyranny, destroying democracy, compromising sovereignty, and staging farcical elections. The ban, he stressed, is to protect national security and shield ICT witnesses and July Movement activists.

India said the ban lacked due process and curtails political space. Bangladesh says: the ban is justice, not politics.
