Russia’s foreign intelligence agency has accused France of seeking to undermine governments in several African countries — claims that have not been independently verified. In a statement issued on Monday, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) alleged that the French government is pursuing what it described as “political revenge” in Africa, following France’s declining influence on the continent. SVR claimed that France was linked to a failed coup attempt in Burkina Faso and accused Paris of seeking to destabilise governments in Mali, the Central African Republic and Madagascar. French authorities have not publicly responded to the allegations.

Reports emerging from Niamey suggest that the sustained guunfire and loud explosions near Diori Hamani International Airport in the early hours of Thursday, 29 January may be linked to an alleged failed coup d’état aimed at removing President Abdourahamane Tchiani. According to claims circulating in security and media circles, armed elements attempted to destabilize key military positions around the airport before being repelled, as calm reportedly returned after about two hours. No official statement has yet confirmed these claims, and authorities have not announced casualties or damage.

Supporters of the Nigerien government argue that this failed plot was allegedly sponsored and encouraged by foreign powers unhappy with Niger’s current political direction and its push for sovereignty. They say the incident shows how external forces continue to test Sahelian states that refuse to bow to pressure. For now, these remain allegations, but the message from Niamey is clear: Niger stands firm, and any attempt to impose change through vi0lence whether internal or externally backed will face strong resistance.
