Earlier today, I posted about a friendly interaction that we had with the police while in Nijmegen (seriously, they were good people). After scanning through the comments, there are a few things that I want to make clear that weren't clear in the video.
1.) The banner that we were featuring was heavily signed and modified by the 82nd Airborne veteran who brought it home. Were it not for that, there was no way that we would have brought it with us. Even though thousands of soldiers brought home plain flags and banners as souvenirs, bringing something like that back to a WWII battlefield in Europe would be unwise.
2.) This was filmed exceptionally early in the morning before the public was out so that we didn't raise any eyebrows or unintentionally offend anyone. We assume that it was an individual on a river barge who called the police...and the local port authority who also showed up with a few questions just as we were wrapping up our history conversation with the police.
3.) For those who evacuated their bowels thinking that we offended the entire European continent, again, I can assure you that everything was fine. We had two European historians with us off camera. The person who called it in was likely just exercising caution, which we completely understand. The police found the flag to be an exceptionally interesting piece that signified Allied victory of the Axis Powers. And before posting the video, I sent it to a number of other European historians (some from the Netherlands) to make sure that no lines were crossed. So there you go.
Hope that you all found the episode interesting and have been enjoying this Market Garden series!
