Signal from Brussels

Europe is not lacking ambition.
What it is lacking is predictability.
At the policy level, the message is clear: clean transport, electrification, grids, storage, hydrogen, batteries.

But capital doesn’t move on vision — it moves on stable frameworks, timelines, and instruments.

For VC funds and growth investors, the next MFF is not a political document.
It’s a risk signal.

‼️ What needs to happen now:
Europe must hard-lock long-term funding priorities, align regulation with financing tools, and design instruments that survive election cycles and geopolitical shocks.
Where stability is guaranteed, capital will follow.
Where funding and regulation diverge, projects stall.
⚠️ The next winners in European energy tech will not just build great technology — they will structure their growth around policy-proof funding models.

Spent the morning talking with founders building fusion energy, and the funding landscape has clearly shifted.

💰 In the last 12 months, the global fusion industry raised approximately $2.6B.
🇪🇺 The largest European round: Proxima Fusion (Munich), closing a €130M Series A in 2025.

Since 2014, AI compute capacity has surged 350,000×, while global energy generation increased only 1.56× — a staggering imbalance.

The consequences are already visible:
• 🔌 Grid bottlenecks everywhere
• 🇮🇪 Data centers now consume 20% of Ireland’s electricity, forcing a freeze on new grid connections until 2028
• 🏭 Each hyperscale AI data center requires 300–500 MW (double with cooling) — on the scale of a power plant

There’s ongoing debate about whether large conferences still create real value.
📍 Looking at Web Summit 2025, the answer appears to be yes.

According to the funding report from Web Summit 2024, nearly 200 startups from the startup program raised a combined $715.5M in follow-on funding.

🤖 AI startups alone accounted for $334.6M, marking a +360% increase compared to the previous year.
💰 Looking beyond the startup program, 332 companies connected to Web Summit 2024 raised a total of $128.8B after the event — more than double the $60.6B linked to the 2023 edition.
📈 These numbers show that Web Summit is not about one week in Lisbon.
It’s about the 12–24 months of fundraising and partnerships that follow.

🚀 For startups raising now or planning for 2026, being part of this funnel is becoming a strategic advantage.
🔍 For investors, it’s a rare opportunity to see companies early — before the big rounds are announced.

The Real Magic Happened on the Sides

While pre-scheduled meetings with VCs, CVCs, and founders weeks in advance laid the groundwork for Web Summit 2025, something unexpected happened this year…
The side events stole my heart.

Don’t get me wrong—the panels were sharp, well-curated, and packed with insights. But the real conversations, the true energy, the unfiltered exchange of ideas? That all unfolded in the informal spaces between the spotlight.

For me, the side events became the heartbeat of the summit.
From rooftop meetups to hidden garden dinners, I found myself in moments that felt less like networking and more like meaningful connection.

One standout: BeGlobe’s community gathering—beautifully intimate, in a space that fostered reflection, serendipity, and real dialogue. It wasn’t about pitching. It was about people. And that always sticks longer.

It’s a reminder that in an era of hyper-optimization and calendar stacking, human connection is still the best catalyst for great deals, partnerships, and ideas.
Grateful for every conversation, every exchange, every handshake that happened away from the main stage.
Sometimes, the sides are the summit.
