As someone who loved my career, taking a year out to travel wasn't an obvious move. Plus, I had no idea what I’d do afterwards.

Not everything went to plan - an airline lost my luggage and I got food poisoning the same day - but it was the best year of my life.

And that gap on my CV? It wasn't the problem I thought it would be.

If you're in Toronto for the World Cup this June and wondering what to do with the rest of your time, this itinerary is for you.

I spent a week here a few years ago, staying with a friend who showed me the city’s highlights from a local’s perspective. Toronto has colourful neighbourhoods, a working waterfront, a great food scene and lively nightlife - plus Niagara Falls is only 90 minutes away.

Toronto is hosting six matches at Toronto Stadium between 12 June and 2 July 2026, starting with Canada’s first ever home World Cup game, as well as welcoming teams including Germany and Croatia.

I love how Tokyo combines ancient traditions with a futuristic aesthetic.

During my time in Japan‘s capital, I visited serene shrines hidden among skyscrapers and danced in underground nightclubs. I got to walk over the world-famous Shibuya crossing (see below). A day trip to the nearby Mount Fuji was another highlight 🗻
