President John Dramani Mahama appeals to the people of Bawku: “We have given the mediation effort to Otumfuo, and he has briefed me constantly on the progress that he has been making, we are almost there. So the current fighting and killings can only be done by people who want to derail the mediation efforts. Let us give peace a chance, but as the army has announced, I have directed the army to move from peacekeeping to peace enforcement, which means they are going to be a bit more robust with anybody who is involved in criminality.

Let us give peace a chance, not only in Bawku but in Nkwanta and all the other places where we are currently suffering conflict.”

Private Legal Practitioner, Vickie Bright urges Deputy Communication Minister-designate, Mohammed Adams Sukparu: “I am truly shocked. This is someone about to become a Deputy Minister of State — a pivotal role in a sector crucial to our national development, particularly as we look toward the future.

The NDC manifesto is very clear on the direction for this sector, to the extent that the ministry has even been renamed. This Ministry is set to lead innovation and development in areas like artificial intelligence and digital skills, including training one million Ghanaians in coding.

The Deputy Minister-designate needs to go and do his homework. I am worried because he will be supporting Sam George, who is very competent and has done well so far. I don’t know whether the minister is going to operate with one hand behind his back.

Competence is important; we simply cannot afford to have unqualified people in positions that directly affect national development. Nation-building is vital, and the Deputy Minister must fully engage with the Ministry’s programmes."

CEO of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson: “The first risk is that the Ghana’s revenue sources are underperforming, which is a huge risk. The customs revenue shortfall is huge, and we must be concerned. That also dovetails into the fact that smuggling is supposed to be taken away some of our revenue, wage and salary pressures.

I have repeatedly said to everyone that Ghana is still broke; let us not think that the benevolence and the goodness we have enjoyed mean we are out of the woods yet, so they should watch out for wage and salary pressures.

The foreign currency is another source of concern. At this moment, there seems to be such a significant divergence between the Bank of Ghana rate and the forex rate, which is never a good sign, that tells you that we are not able to get dollars from the banks at the rate. Nobody chooses to go to the forex if they can’t get it at the bank rate. That divergence tells you that I am not getting to so I am prepared to pay more to get what I want."

Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo comments after the death of Daddy Lumba: "With regret, I have received the sad news of the passing of my dear friend and renowned music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu.

Daddy Lumba, as we affectionately call him, was a pantheon among musical greats of all-time and had a special connection with his fans and the entire nation.

His hit-making songs will remain lasting contributions to my presidential journey and will forever be etched in the annals of political campaign of the New Patriotic Party. He will be sorely missed.

May he peacefully rest in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again."

Professor at the University of Ghana Business School, Godfred Bokpin says the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration deserves credit for building Ghana’s reserves: “We need to give credit to the previous NPP administration for building our reserves. The government is not spending appropriately to match our infrastructure deficit. I am not blaming the Minister, given the fact that they want to spend within their means, this seems optimal now.

Listing the roads we are going to do is different from committing resources to to until you see commitment, cash flow disbursal, it is not going to happen. It looks to me that this government has listened adequately in terms of the direction this economy has to go, and they deserve to take credit.

The current administration has ample room to take credit for the economy. If the previous management of the central bank had 40 per cent of the leadership that the current ones are showing now, the economic situation would have been different. We haven’t seen anything like this in our history."

Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato sends message to Mahama's Administration: “The NDC government is making it look like they came to inherit a crime scene. They should be bold to admit significant gains were made by the immediate past NPP administration. This economy is now Mahama’s, they should stop blaming the past government.

We have made it look at that when the economy was handled over it was bad and there was nothing good about it, but sometimes we are seeing figures today that contradict the current government on what they say. They made it look like they inherited a crime scene, but when they meet the IMF, they praise the former government. This doesn’t show consistency."

Deputy Ministerial nominee for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson advises the public: “The weakness I find unfortunate is our partisan attitude. We should not go to one another’s parties just for the sake of being a member of a party. This is something I found very strange during my few years here. I think it is almost as though we have to find a way to reset our own minds. We have talked about resetting the country but let us reset our minds because the person doing the resetting, of course, is generating from your own resources.

If you are always doing things, thinking that I am going to discredit this government because I am not part of the party, it will affect everybody. We also need to develop a national agenda, something that we could work towards. If it is forty years or fifty years, let us set up a national agenda.

This is an administrative policy that we have to look into because I personally believe that most of these so-called advanced countries are milking our people. On average, most African youth, because of a lack of opportunities, will want to travel outside.

A visa is not cheap, even just the application form alone is about 160 Dollars, which could be a month or two months’ pay for some of our youth or labour. These embassies are collecting this money and almost 99 per cent of them. We have to find a way to streamline this to save our youth their money. Most of these countries are using that as revenue to support their embassies.

If we don’t know this and we think that the rich countries are able to afford to set up embassies, that is not the case, most of their revenues are coming from us to support their embassies, and we have got to find a way to put an end to that. I will work with my minister to make sure any policy that we put together will be something that can be of interest.

Foreign policy is not about protecting foreign nations only; first and foremost, it should be about protecting us, and it should be reciprocated. Our domestic policies are what we extend to foreign policy."

Development Economist, Dr. Frank Bannor says former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has been falsely accused of is borrowing through the bond market: “Between 2015 and 2016, Ghana recorded its highest coupon rates of 10.75% and 9.25% respectively. What is more dangerous was the fact that the NDC was not only borrowing at a very high coupon rate but at a very short tenor! This is critical to debt sustainability, including the use of the fund, and every true economist understands that.

The highest coupon rate ever recorded under Ken Ofori-Atta was 8.875% in April 2021. Not only was Ken borrowing at a low coupon rate, but the tenor of the bonds was mainly long-term, meaning the country would have the much-needed fiscal space to pay back!

You mean the most incompetent finance Minister in the economic history of Ghana, who’s only understanding of economic management was reckless borrowing? It is his mismanagement that led the country into the DDEP in the first place. The macro data have exceeded most IMF programme targets. And all it took was fiscal prudence and efficient spending. Ato toaso!!!

Riding on the emotions of Ghanaians to perpetrate half-truths could be detrimental to our democratic gains as a nation! Ghana’s public debt, recorded at $8.07 billion in 2008, skyrocketed to $29.2 billion by 2016, indicating more than a threefold increase. This surge propelled the debt-to-GDP ratio to 73.1% by the end of 2016 (non-rebased economy).

This reflects a growth rate of approximately 261.83% in the total public debt stock under the NDC from 2009 to 2016.This rate of change indicates that, on average, the NDC government added 32.75% to Ghana’s debt stock each year between 2009 and 2016. This trajectory was even worse between 2012 to 2016. The public debt, which stood at $15.3 billion in 2011, increased to $29.2 billion by the end of 2016, indicating a growth rate of 90.85% from 2012 to 2016.

Another area Ken Ofori-Atta has been falsely accused of is borrowing via the bond market. Bonds are the major form of debt utilised by both advanced and emerging market economies worldwide. Bonds can be issued to either domestic or foreign creditors and may be denominated in domestic or foreign currencies. Eurobonds are commonly denominated in US Dollars (USD) and are typically characterised by long-term maturity periods.

For brevity, if ever there was reckless borrowing, that was seen in the Eurobond market by the NDC. Between 2015 and 2016, Ghana recorded its highest coupon rates of 10.75% and 9.25% respectively.

Again, contrary to public misconception, for example, part of the Eurobond issued in 2018 was used to switch the 2016 Eurobond issued by the NDC, which matured in 2022, with a higher coupon rate of 9.25%, with the remaining amount of $420 million lodged in the Sinking Fund for further liability management.”

Business Development Strategist and Consultant, Winfred Kingsley Afful says performance of the cedi reflects strong macroeconomic management under Mahama’s administration: The 60th anniversary of the cedi couldn’t have been marked at a more fitting time than under President Mahama’s leadership. His six-month record on currency management confirms his prudent and disciplined economic approach.

Cedi at 60 initiative under the theme: 60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability and Economic Resilience.

This stage of the cedi’s life demands the same dignity and strategic care we accord to pensioners. The currency should now transition into a phase of stability, protection, and policy-driven investment, especially through forward-looking initiatives like the 24-hour economic policy."
