Album bespreking van Brennt Vanneste - Collection of Goodbyes: Escapades III (English version below, version Française ci-dessous)
“Brennt Vanneste invites you into his world - a hug in sound, spirit or for real” - Brennt Vanneste
Er zijn tracks met subtiele melancholie [Billy - Your Lipstick Traces], slowcore tendensen [Anymore - I Will Trust The Sky Again - Love Notes In Binary] tot alt-pop met upbeat lagen [Everything Bends Towards You - Keep Insulting Me, You Make Me Feel Important], darkscapes [You Were My Safe Space - There’s Nothing I Can See … It’s Dark] en experimentele hersenspinsels [You Called Me A Monster And Then You Became One - No On Ever].
Never Thought I’d Still Be Surprised”. Het tape age effect dat van bij het begin te horen is tot de opbouw naar de zin Never Thought I’d Still Be Surprised trekt je in een universum met een mix van Eels en de muziek van Blonde Redhead gebruikt als OST bij Rick and Morty.
GV stemt in!

Album review of Brennt Vanneste - Collection of Goodbyes: Escapades III (version française ci-dessous)
“Brennt Vanneste invites you into his world - a hug in sound, spirit or for real” - Brennt Vanneste
Brennt Vanneste - known for his guitar and vocal duties in STAKE - has ever been exploring alternative, upbeat, atmospheric dance tracks, techno, high BPM chaos with several musical project such as KLAKMATRAK, Psychasus, etc and running Stimular - the well-known hardcore rave organisation in Ghent. His wide range of exploration has brought him all across the globe and his talent seems, in my humble opinion, not yet polished and still shows great potential.
Does this apply for his latest release Collection of Goodbyes: Escapades III?
Escapades III is the third (and final?) chapter in these releases over the course of a year and as the title already mentions it is a collection of songs which – as we go through the record - puts the emphasis on the escapades with little to no cohesion. There are tracks that have subtle melancholic pace [Billy – Your Lipstick Traces] or slowcore tendencies [Anymore - I Will Trust The Sky Again - Love Notes In Binary] over a mix of alt-pop with upbeat layers [Everything Bends Towards You - Keep Insulting Me, You Make Me Feel Important], darkscapes [You Were My Safe Space - There’s Nothing I Can See … It’s Dark] and experimental outbursts [You Called Me A Monster And Then You Became
One - No On Ever].
When you have explored the wide range of music the inspiration or influence - might it be deliberately or unconsciously - often shines through, so don’t be surprised if it feels like you are listening to Mark Lanegan or Eels. Because yes, even though Brennt’s voice is mostly known from the grunge-core styled singing, he has the delicacy and authenticity of a clean, deep and dark timbre and it is showcased here as well as on the previous albums.
GVs track review escapade - a short overview
“Grow” might just be the best track on the record. With its cinematic piano melody, eerie synth layer and seemingly subtle field recordings of cicadas just imagine yourself in Japan’s richly varied nature at dusk where slowly nightfall takes over in the form of distorted guitar lines, pushing away the beauty of the day for the wonders of the dark. Not many achieve in shifting a tone without making it feel abrupt or causing friction in the overall feel.
Although Escapades are random thoughts, feelings etc put together, there is a theme that re-occurs in a few track and it kicks-off straight away with the wonderful piano melody in “Billy” which reminds of a classical pianowork by artists such as Gabriél Ólafs, Nils Frahm, John Hayes, Snorri Halgrímsson, Georgeson or Bruno Sanfilippo. It returns in “Everything Bends Towards You” and “Keep Insulting Me, You Make Me Feel Imnportant”: two distinct tracks onwhich Brennt elaborates on the melody creating two amazing pieces of work that in case you ever doubted his creative talent explain how a true artist
masters and uses all his influences to benefit a song.
If you go back a little - in the review as well as on the record - you will find my reference to Eels and “Never Thought I’d Still Be Surprised”. With the tape age effect that is already present from the beginning building up towards the line “Never Thought I’d Still Be Surprised” you get drawn in a universe that is a mix of Eels and the music from Blonde Redhead used as OST for Rick and Morty.
GV approves!
Saying goodbye always feels uneasy and comes with emotions that are often suppressed so if you are looking for a steady album to listen to, you might be waiting for Godot. However if you want some insight in how an artist’s mind looks like this is a highly recommended collection of songs - for whatever you are saying goodbye to. You don’t need to understand everything, just go with the stuff that suits you best. Now GV is off to say goodbye to a lot of things.

Chronique du nouvel album Brennt Vanneste - Collection of Goodbyes: Escapades III (version française)
“Brennt Vanneste invites you into his world - a hug in sound, spirit or for real” - Brennt Vanneste
On y trouve des titres empreints d’une mélancolie subtile [« Billy », « Your Lipstick Traces »], des tendances slowcore [« Anymore », « I Will Trust The Sky Again », « Love Notes In Binary »], de l’alt-pop aux couches résolument upbeat [« Everything Bends Towards You », « Keep Insulting Me, You Make Me Feel Important »], des paysages sonores sombres [« You Were My Safe Space », « There’s Nothing I Can See … It’s Dark »] et des divagations expérimentales [« You Called Me A Monster And Then You Became One », « No One Ever »].
Never Thought I’d Still Be Surprised ». L’effet de bande vieillie, présent dès les premières secondes, puis la progression jusqu’à la phrase Never Thought I’d Still Be Surprised, vous entraînent dans un univers qui semble mêler Eels à la musique de Blonde Redhead utilisée comme bande originale dans Rick and Morty.
GV approuve !
