Let me tell you a story about a quiet school tucked in Mukumu (Kakamega County), along the Kakamega - Kisumu highway. That’s where I spent my four years of high school. It’s a minor seminary, its mission is to form future priests. Some go on to major seminary after those four years. I didn’t. I chose a different path of service, one that fits who I am.
What stands out about this institution isn’t just the cassocks, the prayers or the title - Fr. It’s the values. They sit in you, settle deep and refuse to leave. Neatness. Discipline. Focus. You don’t just practice them while you’re there, you carry them into adulthood whether you planned to or not. The formation is complete: academics, spiritual life, physical training, diligence at work, time management, hygiene - the list is long. At the time, I complained about every bit of it. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade it.
Driving past the school today, I caught myself smiling at memories I once swore I’d erase. They shaped me. They toughened me. They made me pay attention to the person I would eventually become.
And just to put its quiet reputation into perspective: in 2011, this so-called unknown school produced the top KCSE candidate in the Kenya, Nalianya Job. Not bad for a place most people pass without a second thought.
