When the Olympic Games descend upon Los Angeles in the summer of 2028 (LA28), Canadian Football League (CFL) fans may see some familiar faces proudly sporting their home countries’ colours in the quest for flag football Gold.

The league’s Board of Governors has unanimously approved participation in the event, paving the path for CFL players to be selected by each country’s National Olympic Committees in partnership with their respective National Sport Federations. In addition to Canadians and Americans, the CFL currently features a total of 37 Global players from 16 countries.

Jets Flag Elite presented by Fathead is the official girls flag football club travel team of the New York Jets and consists of High School and 14U squads that compete in 5-on-5 flag football tournaments at the local, regional, and national levels. The team features top players from the Northeast. Jets Flag Elite’s mission is to support, elevate, and empower girls’ flag football by giving these young athletes the opportunity to connect with the Jets team and experience football at a more professional level. The Jets and Fathead are covering the costs for travel expenses, uniforms, equipment, and tournament fees for the players. The resources provided will help develop girls flag football at the elite level, provide pathways to college scholarships and support opportunities for the USA National team as girls flag becomes an Olympic Sport in 2028.

The NFL plans to launch women’s and men’s professional flag football leagues “in the next couple of years,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday.

The timeline outlined by Goodell at a sports conference in London would see the leagues created ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which will feature flag football for the first time.

“We’re committed to creating a women’s professional league, and a men’s professional flag league. We’ve had a great deal of interest in that and I expect that we’ll be able to do that, launch that, in the next couple of years,” Goodell said at the Leaders in Sport conference at Twickenham Stadium.

The league has prioritized flag football as a way to attract young fans, both male and female.

“The demand is there. We’re seeing colleges in the states and universities internationally also that want to make it a part of their program,” Goodell said.

“If you set that structure up where there’s youth leagues, going into high school, into college and then professional, I think you can develop a system of scale. That’s an important infrastructure that we need to create.”
