From the forum with Dr. Amey Victoria Adkins: "Mistaken Identities: S*x, Sarah Baartman, and the Imaginaries of Border Crossings." Adkins considers the theological resonances of Sarah Baartman, most popularly known at the turn of the nineteenth century as the "Hottentot Venus." Problematizing the notion of "modern slavery" as a primary analytic for contemporary analysis of human trafficking, this research looks to the Hottentot event as part of a critical genealogy of race driving ideas of decency, civility, propriety, rescue and salvation. The work complicates the identity and (theo)politics of the sex-trafficked subject alongside questions of the modalities of liberation and oppression.
