A 75 kW photovoltaic installation is to be put into operation on the roof of 2nd Secondary School “Acad. Emilian Stanev” – the heart of the first energy community in Sofia. The project will be implemented through a partnership between the Vitosha district, citizens, and companies with a total budget of BGN 90,000. After 10 years, ownership of the plant will be transferred to the municipality, and its electricity will power the school and other municipal facilities.
The project was unanimously approved by the Sofia City Council, and the report was submitted by the Deputy Mayor for Ecology, Nadezhda Bobcheva, the Mayor of the Vitosha district, architect Zarko Klinkov, and representatives of several political groups. Although this is the first such project in Sofia, similar...

Even before the Just Transition Mechanism came to be, Czechia had devised its own Restart strategy as a way to figure out a way forward for its three coal regions. The most industrial of these – the Moravian-Silesian region, which borders Poland’s Silesia, is also the one that has progressed the most in its coal exit journey – and the sprawling industrial complex of Dolni Vitkovice in the city of Ostrava is a stark reminder of that. This used to be a city within the city, and now its enormous iron pipes and blast furnaces lay dormant awaiting a second life as cultural, educational and museum centres.
If you want to see the future face of the Czech Republic’s third largest city, however, you need to head a bit further out to the suburbs where another sprawling complex lies. This...

We all know that Stara Zagora is the Bulgarian region most affected by the gradual phase-out of coal-fired power generation. This transition is not just about energy – it is about people, their livelihoods, and an entire region.
With these words, Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Cohesion and Reform Policy, addressed the participants in the TOP JOBS career forum in Stara Zagora, which took place from September 11 to 13.
The European Commissioner emphasized that the European Commission "is fully aware of the scale of these challenges, but we are also convinced that we can turn this challenge into an opportunity for growth and renewal in Stara Zagora.”
According to him, promoting growth and renewal in regions such as Stara Zagora is a...

Silesia has always been a little special among the Polish regions. For seven centuries, it was a domain of the German Empire, before becoming a part of the resurrected Polish state. Nevertheless, it had always been home to a mix of ethnic groups and religious denominations forming a proud regional identity that persists until today. This goes for things like food and dialect (some activists even claim that there’s a Silesian language that deserves its own official recognition), but also, since the 19th century, this identity invariably includes coal.
During the Cold War era, Poland was one of the top global producers of this “black gold”. Silesia has long been known for its vast deposits of high-quality hard coal – in contrast to most other Eastern European coal regions where the...

The National Statistical Institute (NSI) significantly raised its figures for Bulgaria's economic growth in the second quarter. The preliminary figures published on August 14 showed 3.1% real GDP growth, while on Friday the first revision raised them to 3.4%.
In fact, the NSI has raised its estimates for the previous two quarters – the first of 2025 and the fourth of 2024 – to 3.4% and 3.3% on an annual basis, respectively.
The breakdown by components of gross domestic product (GDP) shows that growth is driven solely by consumption – by households (8.3% increase) and the government (11.5% increase). The situation with exports (4.8% decline) and investments (1.3% decline) is only getting worse.

Currently, there is a shortage of 36 – 37 carriages to cover the train schedule. However, by the end of the year, the shortage will increase to 70 carriages. This was stated by Transport Minister Grozdan Karadzhov during a blitz control in the National Assembly on Friday.
He explained that a large part of the rolling stock of the state railways is so old that in a normal situation it should not be in operation. However, as Karadzhov said, maintenance repairs are being carried out to keep some carriages and trains running. But this also has its limits.
One of the options mentioned by the minister is to urgently seek rolling stock from other countries, probably similar to the deal with Germany's Deutsche Bahn to acquire their old carriages. However, this did not prove particularly...

Labor productivity in Bulgaria is actually declining on an annual basis – by 0.2%. This is shown by preliminary data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI) for the second quarter of 2025. The indicator is formed by the total value created in the economy, divided by all those employed in it.
According to this formula, each employed person produces BGN 14,097.7 of the current gross domestic product (GDP), with each person generating an average of BGN 36.1 of GDP per hour worked. It appears that the amount is growing, but the data is at current prices, and after applying the relevant deflator, the actual output per Bulgarian citizen decreases.
The gross value added (GVA) per employee in the second quarter of 2025 decreased by 1.9% compared to the second quarter of 2024, and the...

Bulgaria expects to receive the second payment under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) by mid-October. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev during Friday's parliamentary question time.
The request is currently being processed, and Donchev expects the procedure to be completed on September 15, having received assurances from the EC, in his words, that Bulgaria has fulfilled its commitments for the second payment.
He recalled that the revised request for a second payment of over €650 million was sent in July, as committed, and after agreement was reached with the EC on changing the NAP.
Regarding the third payment, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the plan is to send the request to the EC for a tranche of over €1.6 billion before the end of...
