US court sentences Nigerian to 11 years for $1.3m scam

A Nigerian man, Abiola Quadri, has been sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison in the United States for orchestrating a $1.3 million fraud scheme involving stolen identities to claim COVID-19 pandemic unemployment and disability benefits.

The 43-year-old, a permanent resident of Pasadena, California, used the illicit funds to construct a nightclub, shopping mall, and a lavish 120-room resort hotel in Nigeria, authorities revealed.

According to a statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on its Instagram page on Wednesday, Quadri submitted hundreds of fraudulent applications using stolen identities, siphoning off taxpayer money.

“We’re proud that our special agents’ hard work paid off and Quadri will face justice for his crimes,” ICE declared, highlighting the scale of the operation that raked in $1.3 million.

Details from ICE’s website, dated July 16, 2025, paint a fuller picture of the crime.

The fraudster withdrew the stolen funds from ATMs between 2021 and his arrest in September 2024 at Los Angeles International Airport, where he was en route to Nigeria.

Investigations revealed he sent at least $500,000 abroad, funding the construction of the Oyins International resort in Nigeria, complete with a nightclub, mall, and high-end amenities. Shockingly, Quadri failed to disclose his ownership of the hotel in his court financial disclosures.

Authorities uncovered 17 counterfeit checks worth over $3.3 million on Quadri’s phone, alongside messages negotiating these fraudulent transactions.

Some checks were linked to shell businesses under his aliases. Quadri also exploited his Altadena-based company, Rock of Peace, which was paid to provide daycare for developmentally disabled children in California, misappropriating food-aid debit cards found during a search of his residence.

Quadri was sentenced to 135 months in prison on July 10, 2023, by United States District Judge George H. Wu in Los Angeles.

The judge also ordered him to pay $1,356,229 in restitution and a $35,000 fine. Quadri, who admitted to acquiring permanent residency through a “fake wedding” via court documents, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud on January 2.

“The United States Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations, and the California Employment Development Department Investigation Division investigated this matter.

“Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Brown of the Major Frauds Section prosecuted this case,” ICE stated

DisCos: Customers in other states don't want to pay bills after Enugu reduced its tariff

Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) under the aegis of the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) say customers are threatening not to pay their electricity bills following a recent slash by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).

On July 21, EERC reduced the Band A electricity tariff in Enugu state to N160/kWh from N209.

In a statement on Thursday, Sunday Oduntan, the association’s chief executive officer (CEO), said the action has affected other DisCos outside the state due to mounting pressure to reduce tariffs.

“Since the release of the tariff order by EERC for Enugu State residents, the electricity distribution companies in other states have come under intense pressure and scrutiny also to reduce tariffs, while some customers have taken a position that they will no longer pay their electricity bills until tariffs are reduced,” the statement reads.

The DisCos said the move was made without adequate coordination with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) or other key market participants.

Obama fires back after Trump threatens to jail him over ‘treason’

Former US President Barack Obama has clapped back at Donald Trump after the current president accused him of “treason” and called for a criminal investigation over the so-called Russia collusion saga.

Obama’s spokesman Patrick Rodenbush dismissed Trump’s comments as “bizarre allegations” and a “weak attempt at distraction.”

“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one,” Rodenbush said.

The pushback came hours after Trump, speaking in the Oval Office alongside Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., doubled down on his claim that Obama was the mastermind of a “treasonous conspiracy” to remove him from power.

Trump, who posted an AI-generated image of Obama in an orange jumpsuit on Truth Social over the weekend, told reporters:
“After what they did to me, whether it’s right or wrong, it’s time to go after people.”

Asked who should face prosecution, Trump replied without hesitation:
“It would be President Obama – who started it – and Biden was there with him, and [James] Comey was there, and [James] Clapper, the whole group was there.”

The accusations stem from a report released by Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, which claims Obama’s team “manufactured and politicized intelligence” to tie Trump to Russia in 2016.

But Obama’s camp pointed to findings from a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report affirming that Russia did attempt to influence the 2016 election, though it failed to alter votes.

Trump has vowed “retribution” since returning to the White House for a second term, often revisiting grievances from his first presidency, including the Steele dossier and the Mueller investigation, which found no evidence of Trump conspiring with Russia.

Meanwhile, the president’s remarks sparked fresh talks on whether his Justice Department, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, will act on his calls to prosecute a former president.

Oil cabal fought back after subsidy removal – Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has said that different policy decisions being made by President Tinubu are all in the best interest of Nigerians.

Shettima said this while hosting executives of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, the removal of fuel subsidy, the realignment of the multiple exchange rate system, and ongoing tax reforms are all in the best interest of Nigerians. Recollecting how it was for the President to remove the fuel subsidy, Shettima said

“While the fuel subsidy had been an albatross around the neck of successive administrations, he had the courage and conviction to remove it.

The oil cabal fought back, but he refused to budge. He stood his ground because he acted in the best interest of Nigerians,” he added.
