The day my mother exposed my father’s family secrets in their WhatsApp group, I knew peace had officially packed its bags and left our house.

It all started when my aunt the self-proclaimed “first daughter of the family” insulted my mother directly in the group. She typed:
“Some women are only in a man’s house eating food and giving birth, they don’t have respect or value. Some of you are liabilities.”

She didn’t call my mother’s name, but everyone knew who she was shading. And my mother? She doesn’t take insults lying down. That was the moment she tied her wrapper properly, adjusted her glasses, and said: “Enough is enough!”

The first reply shook the group:
“Liability? Is it not you that almost sold your father’s land in secret because you wanted to go and join your sugar daddy in Port Harcourt?!”

The group went silent for two minutes. Then one uncle tried to calm her down:
“Madam, please don’t bring private matters to the family group.”

My mother responded with fire:
“Private matter? The day you stole church offering and they tied you to the mango tree, was it also private matter? Should I send the photo? I still have it.”

People started typing “Jesus is Lord” and “This is too much.” But my mother was just getting started.

She dropped a five-minute voice note narrating how Uncle Kunle was deported from Italy for carrying drugs in a cooler of egusi soup, how Auntie Bisi once fought in Oyingbo market and removed her wrapper, and how one cousin was caught stealing plantain in boarding school and the principal wrote “THIEF” on his forehead with red ink.

My father, who was sitting in the living room, started sweating like Christmas goat. He tried to collect her phone, but my mother shouted:
“If you touch this phone, I will tell them about your bet9ja addiction and the day you almost sold our fridge in 2005. I am ready to finish this family today!”

That was how she continued typing.

The biggest bomb came when she exposed the secret family land deal. She wrote in full caps:
“SO YOU PEOPLE THINK I DON’T KNOW? ALL OF YOU SHARED THE LAND MONEY IN SECRET AND BOUGHT MOTORCYCLES. YOU EVEN LIED THAT WITCHES STOLE THE DOCUMENTS. IT IS A BIG SHAME.”

By this time, family members started leaving the group one by one. Notifications were flying:

“+2348… left”

“+44… left”

“+1… left”

Even the uncle in London ran away.

At home, the drama continued. My father locked the door and shouted, “You have disgraced me!” He carried his belt and tried to flog my mother. But my mother was ready. She grabbed pestle from the kitchen and screamed:
“If you beat me, I will forward those love letters you wrote to Sister Janet in choir to the church WhatsApp group. By tomorrow morning, RCCG will know the real you!”

My father froze. He knew she wasn’t joking. He quietly dropped the belt, went to the bedroom, and covered himself with wrapper like a child.

Me and my siblings were in the corner laughing and crying at the same time because we didn’t know if this was comedy or tragedy.

Till today, that family WhatsApp group is like graveyard. Nobody dares post motivational quotes again. Even when someone says “Good morning family,” you won’t see any reply. Everyone is afraid my mother might still be watching, ready to release Season 2.
