Bata’ikwi. Ese Ejja Etiikianaa Wowikaninaje (ALEJANDRO MACHUQUI DOMINGUEZ, GABRIEL GALLINATE)

This bilingual work (in Ese Ejja and Spanish) is the result of a project undertaken with great dedication by Alejandro Machuqui and Gabriel Gallinate, the principal researchers behind this publication. Alejandro Machuqui, a teacher, linguist, and native speaker of Ese Ejja, and Gabriel Gallinate, a Bolivian linguist specializing in Amazonian languages, collaborated extensively to record audio and video of stories and myths with local elders, while also conducting interviews on various aspects of oral tradition. This book features both the original Ese Ejja versions of these myths and their Spanish translations.

The elders who contributed to this collection are individuals who inherited these stories from their parents and grandparents, dating back to a time when the eyamikekwa—the healer who performed rituals and kept much of the oral tradition alive—played a central role in the community. Among these contributors are Melicio Callaú (Be’o), Laida Callaú (Kojjamá), Ernesto Monje (Dejja Oshe), Miguel Justiniano (Joti), Rufina Callaú (Moosaya), Ramel Mamio (Shameni), Alberto Torres (Sakwa), and Roberto Sosa (Enoko).

Each story in this book is enhanced by illustrations created by young Ese Ejja artists from Portachuelo Alto and Portachuelo Bajo. As native speakers, these artists interpreted the content of the myths and stories, bringing them vividly to life through their artwork. The illustrations include contributions by Max Parada, Yerson Machuqui, and Dagner Machuqui, as well as additional artwork by Gabriel Gallinate.
