The Role of
As assistant governor, you are the connection between your clubs and the district. The relationships you build with club leaders make Rotary stronger.
you do
- Visit your clubs regularly: Meet with each club at least once a quarter either in person, by phone, or by web conference. Listening to them enables you to discuss their concerns and needs, and provide information, resources, and advice that will allow them to be more successful.
- Keep the governor up to date on each club’s progress and identify areas that may need attention.
- Help club leaders prepare for the governor’s official visit.
- Monitor the progress of your clubs toward their goals: After a club visit, report your assessment and feedback through Rotary Club Central. Use this online tool to make sure your clubs are on track with their goals and achievements in areas such as membership, service initiatives, and giving to The Rotary Foundation.

MAKES A GOOD ASSISTANT GOVERNOR?
In the previous section'Role of the Assistant Governor', you will have encountered a wide range of expectations. However each Assistant Governor brings a variety of experience to the position. This will range from experience as a District Officer to that of no District experience other than being a Club President. Consequently the exercises in the rest of the course ask you to individually reflect upon six aspects of the role and develop your thoughts on what could be specific priority areas during your 1st year as an AG.
The six aspects are:
• Availability for Clubs and District
• Interpersonal skills
• Knowledge
• Understanding the role and duties of the Assistant Governor
• Knowledge of the expectations from the District Governor
• What to avoid.
Assistant Governor - level include:
- Assisting in developing district goals (annual outcomes).
- Coordinating the governors visits with (your area) clubs.
- Communicating clubs strengths, weaknesses, and progress toward goals to the District Governor.
- Attending district meetings.
- Participating in district events and activities, including Rotary Foundation activities and fundraising.
- Participating in the district team training seminar.
- Attending the Presidents-Elect training seminar and the district training assembly (District Assembly).
- Helping identify and develop future district leaders.
- Briefing the Incoming Assistant Governor on the status of clubs (Your area).
Assistant Governor - to (area) include:
- Checking in with clubs regularly (at least quarterly).
- Helping presidents-elect develop effective goals and enter them in Rotary Club Central.
- Monitoring the progress of clubs toward their goals in Rotary Club Central.
- Assisting clubs as they schedule and plan the governors visit.
- Attending club meetings, related club assemblies, and other events, as invited
Motivating clubs to follow through on the governors requests.
- Promoting ways the district leadership team can support clubs.
- Identifying and developing future district leaders.
- Promoting attendance at the district conference and other district meetings
Coordinating club-level training with the appropriate District Committee.
