The thing is this: The original idea (back in 1977) was for Recommended Records to "recommend" music. So, although the USA offices of the label and retail distribution have fallen prey to streams and youtube, we've still got the itch to spread some word now and then. You can still buy this great stuff, in it's vertitable, hard-copy form, from ReR Megacorp in London, and from Cuneiform and Squidco in N. America. NEWS FROM BABEL RARITY - A gorgeous, minor miracle. Over 30 years' time, the elements have taken the liberty to make Chris Cutler's original scribe of "KLEIN'S BOTTLE" physically mimic his lyrics (and Zeena's backwards/forwards accordion).

During the 80’s, when most forms of “progressive” music were floundering and grasping at the straws of commercial success, the little-known but highly artistic and motivated world of ROCK IN OPPOSITION had a golden age. At that time, one of the shining stars of the movement was the band, NEWS FROM BABEL (Lindsay Cooper, Dagmar Krause, Zeena Parkins, Bill Gilonis and Chris Cutler – with cameos by Robert Wyatt, Sally Potter and Phil Minton).

Before the Digital Revolution made things all-too-simple, some musicians went to great lengths in an attempt to be sonically innovative. Stephen Rickard, for example, designed a vari-speed, cassette-implementing proto-sampler, which he named the “Tape Switchboard”. This photo album then, is a tribute to one of my favorite home-made instruments and, most importantly, contains the inventor’s informative essay regarding his creation, from the November, 1987 issue of the ReR Quarterly Magazine. Sadly, the photos come directly from the internet without credits, so if anyone knows who’s responsible…….

Tod Dockstader remains one of the world’s most celebrated composers of Musique Concrète. He’s been a maverick of experimental sound since the 60’s, with acousmatically-generated classics like “Quatermass”, “Water Music” and “Luna Park” and, more recently, his ARIEL series. Here he teams up with David Lee Myers, himself a mainstay of the Electronic Music world, to produce a pair of discs from 2005, which threaten to dismantle our notions of NATURE and ENTERTAINMENT. STEVAN TICKMAYER’s “Repetitive Selective Removal Of One Protecting Group” is (aside from some Zappa here and there) the most complex, through-composed/re-assembled experimental music to date. It makes almost everything else sound like “Mary Had A Little Lamb” or “Chopsticks”. Don’t take my word for it; Please refer to these samples:

Contemporaries of Pere Ubu and best known for their work with the Numbers Band, Bob and Jack Kidney were also key members of David Thomas' late '90s Mirror Man extravaganza. They were early members of the Ohio generation - which included Rocket from the Tombs, Devo, Pere Ubu, Tin Huey, The Dead Boys and the Waitresses. “'This group'”, Davd Thomas wrote, “inspired everyone, regenerated everyone, and was a nagging doubt in the back of everyone's minds”....
