Hiro Mashima didn’t come up with Panther Lily out of nowhere — he took inspiration from John Blacksad, the detective from the Blacksad comics, created by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido.
If you compare them, it actually makes a lot of sense. They both have that serious tone, imposing presence, and that “quiet but dangerous” energy. Not identical, but the vibe is definitely there.
Basically, Mashima took that more grounded, noir-style influence and adapted it into his own anime style — and it ended up becoming one of the most unique designs in Fairy Tail.

Lucy’s initial concept wasn’t very different from her final version. At first, she used cards instead of keys, but since that idea had already been used many times, Hiro Mashima decided to abandon it.
The original Lucy also had curly hair, wore two ponytails instead of just one, and had a more retro-style outfit, featuring a jabot, ruffles, and lace. Her older skirt appeared to have more frills, and her blouse included a scarf underneath.
In this early concept, she doesn’t seem to be holding her usual weapon—a black whip with a heart-shaped tip. Additionally, she wore lace-up high heels instead of the black knee-high boots she uses now.
