Tomorrow, the world’s largest conference on HIV and AIDS opens in Rio de Janeiro!

Ahead of International AIDS Conference, hosted by the IAS - International AIDS Society, we’re sharing this bonus clip from our latest episode. Marina Vergueiro — Global Communications Coordinator at Luso+, the Lusophone Network of People Living with HIV — reflects on what host country Brazil has achieved: everyone diagnosed with HIV in Brazil, regardless of nationality or legal status, has access to treatment and prevention. And Brazil is one of the few countries in the world to have eliminated mother-to-child transmission.

Marina knows the progress first-hand. Since her diagnosis in 2012, she has gone from five pills a day to just one.

We can now stop HIV transmission from parents to children. Millions of people are on treatment, and new infections are being prevented. But as Magda Robalo (President of the Institute for Global Health and Development) explains in this clip from the latest episode, a new generation is coming of age with no memory of what HIV/AIDS meant in the 80s and 90s, and they are taking risks because that connection to the past is missing.

“That’s a major challenge for prevention and a main challenge for us to bring AIDS to an end. I’m speaking as a public health person committed to finishing the business.”
