Every couple who finally walks into a counsellor's office carries a story that, at first, feels impossible to untangle — like a pile of puzzle pieces with no picture to guide you. That's the honest starting point of one of the closing case studies in the book How People Change. But what if the confusion isn't actually random? What if underneath even the most tangled story there's a recognisable pattern — one that explains not only why people collapse, but how God puts them back together? The book brings a story of a real couple whose marriage nearly collapsed under years of secrecy, addiction, and bitterness. Their story matters not because it's dramatic, but because it shows the gospel doing real work in the middle of an ordinary, difficult marriage.
A Relationship Built on the Wrong Foundation
The couple met when they were very young, drawn to each other by exactly the kind of attraction that should have raised warning signs: she came from a churchgoing family and found his rebellious type exciting; he had only recently professed faith, and was captivated by her innocence while sensing he'd never truly fit into her world. When her parents raised concerns and asked them to stop seeing each other, the couple didn't pause to reconsider — they simply hid the relationship. Secret calls, secret meetings, a pregnancy kept quiet, and a marriage entered far too young and far too fast. The book doesn't dwell on the specific choices to shame them; it uses the story to point to something deeper. This wasn't just impulses of the youth— it was a matter of worship. Every person worships something, and when God isn't at the centre, something else always fills that space. For her, it was the dream of an ideal partner. For him, it was freedom from any accountability. Those misplaced loves, more than the circumstances themselves, were the real root of the pressure that later produced such painful fruit: a husband who withdrew into old habits, a wife who grew cold and hopeless, children caught in the fallout, and a couple isolated from the very community that could have supported them.
