RATTLERS REGIN ONCE MORE 🐍🏀🏆
The 2024 Hugh Campbell Basketball Tournament capped off an amazing week of basketball with a Championship Game matchup between the #1 Sunland Baptist Academy Stingers and the #2 C.I. Gibson High School Rattlers that was a battle for the ages. The anticipation inside the Sir Kendal Issacs Gymnasium on Thursday night was at an all-time high as fans eagerly awaited the clash between these two powerhouse teams.
From the opening tip-off, both teams brought their A-game, displaying incredible skill, determination, and intensity. C.I. Gibson jumped out to an early 15-5 lead and seemingly never looked back. The Rattlers took that early momentum into the half with a 36-24 lead.
Coming out of the half the Rattlers got up by as many as 14 before the Stingers were able to cut the deficit to within 1. But as the saying goes basketball is a game of runs and every time the Stingers tried to make the game close the Rattlers were able to string together a few key defensive stops and convert offensively to extend the lead.
Entering the 4th C.I. Gibson bolstered a 51-47 lead with no intentions of taking their foot off the gas. Every basket, steal, and defensive stop was met with thunderous cheers from the crowd. With each passing minute, it became increasingly clear that this game would go down to the wire.
Down 9 with under 2 minutes to go the Stingers found themselves in unfamiliar territory and was starting to see the dreams of a 3-Peat slowly slip away. They went on a 6-0 to bring it within 3 before they were forced to play the fouling game and hope that the Rattlers would struggle at the line. That was not the case as C. I Gibson would either split or convert both free throws each time they went to the line. A late heave by Edwin Ferguson brought the Stingers within 2 with 1 second remaining but it was too little too late as the MVP Tashon “Stewie” Butler iced the game at the line as time expired.
It was A wire-wire 75-71 victory for coach Kevin “KJ” Johnson and the Rattlers as he led his team back to the mountain top for a record 6th time tying only Norris Bain for the most ever and their first since 2014. Tashon “Stewie” Butler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player following up his 27 Pts in the Final Four with 27 Pts, 9 Reb, and 5 Ast in the Championship Game. Edwin Ferguson led the Stingers with 25 Pts in the loss.
