The Romeo and Juliet of Bhutan: The Legend of Gasa Lamai Singye and Changyul Bum Galem 🇧🇹❤️
Deep in the heart of Bhutan's history lies our most famous and enduring tragic love story. Set in the 17th century, it tells the tale of Galem, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant from Changyul in Punakha, and Singye, a humble servant from Gasa.
Despite their vastly different social classes, the two fell deeply, secretly in love along the banks of the Mo Chhu River. But their happiness was short-lived. A powerful local official, captivated by Galem's beauty, demanded her hand in marriage. To clear his path, the official had Singye banished far away to the cold mountains of Gasa.
When Galem bravely refused the marriage and revealed she was carrying Singye's child, her furious family disowned her and cast her out. Alone and heartbroken, she wandered the riverbanks, singing sorrowful songs and begging travelers to send word to her lover.
By the time Singye finally received the message and rushed back to Punakha, he was too late. Galem had passed away from grief. Devastated beyond words, Singye arrived just as her funeral pyre was being lit. Unable to imagine a life without her, he leaped into the flames to be eternally united with his soulmate in death.
Today, Galem’s ancestral house still stands in Punakha, a quiet reminder of a love that refused to be broken by status, distance, or time.
