DJ JOSHNIC NAVIGATES THE CHOPPY WATERS OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Reporting by: Chenesani Jeremiah
In Francistown

When the bookings slow down and the future feels uncertain, DJ Joshnic refuses to give up.

For him, the music industry is more than just a side hustle—it is his passion, and quitting is not an option.

DJ Joshnic, whose real name is Joshua Kgotle, is a 29-year-old DJ originally from Moshupa but now based in Broadhurst, Gaborone.

He began his journey in 2015, initially treating DJ'ing as a part-time gig.

“At first, I just wanted to make some extra money,” he shared.

“But when I became a resident DJ in Gaborone, I realised I could use this business to pay my bills.”

DJ Joshnic has built a reputation for versatility, performing at a range of events including corporate functions, weddings, birthday parties, and entertainment gatherings.

“I don’t have a specific target market—I take on any kind of event,” he explained.

However, the road has been far from easy, with challenges such as sabotage and jealousy from others in the industry.

“There are people doing big things in this business, but they don’t help upcoming DJs like me,” he said.

DJ Joshnic admits that his business has not been performing well since last year, despite efforts to market and advertise his services.

“Sometimes I feel that if I had better connections, I could achieve more,” he said.

Nevertheless, he remains hopeful and determined to find new ways to grow.

In addition to DJing, he has ventured into other roles to sustain himself.

He works as a radio DJ and an event organiser, and occasionally indulges in singing, though DJ'ing remains his first love.

“In today’s world, it’s better to juggle multiple jobs than rely on just one,” he noted.

Despite the obstacles, DJ Joshnic remains optimistic and has advice for others in the industry.

He urges aspiring DJs to be patient and resilient.

“This music business is tough, but if you stay calm, work hard, and put God first, doors will open,” he said.

As DJ Joshnic continues to pursue his dreams, his faith and passion for music remain the driving forces behind his determination.

He hopes to connect with more clients and take his career to greater heights.

LEBANG GAGOOPE: THE VISIONARY BEHIND GIRL CHILD MOVEMENT BOTSWANA

Lebang Gagoope is a woman on a mission.

As the founder of Girl Child Movement Botswana, she has dedicated her life to empowering young girls, ensuring they have the tools, opportunities, and confidence to overcome challenges and realise their potential.

With a deep passion for advocacy and education, Lebang’s vision is to create a society where every girl feels valued, capable, and inspired to thrive.

Through her journey, Lebang has seen first-hand the barriers young girls face – ranging from limited access to education to societal pressures that stifle their dreams.

Determined to change this narrative, she launched the Girl Child Movement Botswana, a grassroots initiative aimed at addressing these issues head-on.

For Lebang, this movement is more than just a project; it’s a calling.

The Girl Child Movement Botswana works tirelessly to advocate for the rights of girls while fostering a culture of mentorship and support.

From leadership workshops to awareness campaigns about gender-based violence, the movement tackles critical issues impacting young girls.

Lebang’s hands-on approach ensures that the initiative reaches even the most remote areas of Botswana, offering hope and guidance where it is needed most.

Beyond the movement, Lebang has also made her mark as an author.

Her book, written to inspire children facing challenges, is a powerful tool that instils hope and encourages young readers to rise above life’s hardships.

To expand its reach, the movement is seeking donations to distribute the book to schools, shelters, and communities, ensuring that as many children as possible receive this message of resilience and strength.

The movement has already made a significant impact, touching the lives of countless girls across Botswana.

Participants often share how their confidence has grown, their dreams reignited, and their belief in themselves strengthened.

Lebang is proud of these achievements but knows there is still much more to be done.

As the Girl Child Movement Botswana continues to grow, Lebang invites individuals, organisations, and businesses to join the cause. Whether through partnerships, sponsorships, or simply spreading the word, every effort helps to amplify the movement’s message.

Together, she believes, it is possible to build a brighter future for every girl in Botswana.

Lebang’s unwavering dedication to empowering girls is a testament to what one person can achieve with passion and purpose.

Her work with the Girl Child Movement Botswana, along with her inspirational book, is not just changing lives – it is shaping a generation of strong, confident, and capable women ready to take on the world.

PERCYV IS BLENDING FAITH AND MUSIC ON HIS JOURNEY TO SUCCESS

Reporting by: Chenesani Jeremiah
In Francistown

"Passion favours the brave" is a motto Percival Mpho Ngwengwe seems to live by.

This Tonota native, a singer, songwriter, and musician known as PercyV, is pursuing his musical dreams with his gospel trio, Tru-Majestic Family.

PercyV’s musical journey began around 2003, a spark ignited in Sam Wilson’s studios in Phikwe.

He recalls the thrill of recording his first song, "Young Soul," produced by Rastakid.

Now, under the guidance of his fellow trio member, Mark Amillie, PercyV has amassed an impressive collection of 22 solo tracks and collaborations, a testament to his growth and artistic evolution.

Tru-Majestic Family's music resonates deeply with their faith.

"We perform mostly in churches, primarily because we are believers," PercyV explains.

Their performances aren't confined to sacred spaces, however.

The trio also shares their inspiring melodies in schools, spreading messages of hope and positivity.

Like many artists, PercyV harbours dreams of collaboration.

He expresses a deep admiration for Botswana's iconic musician, Maxy.

"I love her voice," he says, believing their styles would blend beautifully.

Exciting news awaits fans of Tru-Majestic Family.

An EP is slated for release this winter, with a full album soon to follow.

PercyV's voice brims with hope as he expresses, "We really hope Batswana could support the project."

Gratitude is a recurring theme in PercyV's narrative.

He acknowledges the unwavering support of his fans, recognising their patience and belief in his music.

"Gratitude is the foundation of everything great," he emphasises.

The journey hasn't been without its challenges, but PercyV and his group choose to focus on growth.

"We are not facing any challenges," he clarifies, "but we are rather growing and embracing growth."

This positive outlook is a driving force behind their continued success.

PercyV's advice to other aspiring artists is simple yet profound: "They should not stop working hard and results will surface."

His own journey is a living testament to this philosophy.

From his early days in the studio to the upcoming EP and album, PercyV's dedication to his craft is clear.

He embodies the harmony of faith, music, and perseverance, a melody that resonates far beyond the borders of Tonota.

SHMIR DIVAS: A NEW FORCE IN AFRO-FUSION MUSIC

Shmir Divas are poised to electrify the Botswana music scene with their infectious blend of Afro-pop and R&B.

The dynamic duo of Carol Thabile Jacobs (23) and Kenanao Bofelo Sentsho (24) is ready to captivate audiences with their heartfelt lyrics, relatable themes, and undeniable talent.

These two young women, both hailing from Molepolole, are more than just singers.

They're storytellers, weaving narratives of love, loss, and resilience into their music.

Their debut single, "Waineelela," is a raw and emotional journey that will leave you breathless.

But Shmir Divas are about more than just heartbreak.

They’re about sisterhood, about finding your voice, and about defying expectations.

"We want to inspire people," says Carol, her eyes sparkling with ambition.

"We want to show them that they can chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles."

And obstacles they have faced.

Learning to navigate the complexities of the Setswana language while crafting their unique sound was a significant challenge.

But these young women, fuelled by their passion and a shared dream, persevered.

"Our first day in the studio was magical," recalls Kenanao.

"Working with our manager, Mischelle Gaofano, and the incredible songwriter/producer Perion Gates, we felt this incredible energy.

It was the moment we knew Shmir Divas was something special."

Now, with their debut single out and an album in the works, Shmir Divas are ready to conquer the Botswana music scene. They dream of collaborating with both established and upcoming artists, of filling stadiums, and of becoming a global sensation.

But their ambition extends beyond fame and fortune. Shmir Divas want to leave a lasting impact on their listeners, a message of hope, strength, and the power of self-belief.
So, get ready to feel the Shmir. This is just the beginning for these two talented young women, and their journey is one you won't want to miss.

HOW LENNA CHENDO TURNS PASSION INTO PROFITABLE BUSINESS

Reporting by: Chenesani Jeremiah
In Francistown

For some, a camera is just a device, but for 25-year-old Lenna Chendo, it’s a gateway to creativity, connection, and entrepreneurial success.

Based in Jwaneng, Chendo is the founder of Lennygraphy, a photography company that transforms fleeting moments into lasting memories.

What started as a casual hobby in 2019 has grown into a budding business with studios in Jwaneng and Gaborone’s Block 8.

Chendo recalls his early days in Francistown, where his love for the camera was born.

“I used to take random photos of anything, and it gave me so much contentment,” he shares.

“With time, I realised I could turn my hobby into a business.”

Fuelled by his passion for photography, Chendo’s journey into entrepreneurship was natural.

“Starting out was easy because my love for the camera kept me going,” he explains.

His enthusiasm for capturing moments brought him joy and introduced him to new people, making his work even more rewarding.

But like every entrepreneur, Chendo faced challenges.

After relocating to Jwaneng, he struggled to rebuild the vibrant clientele he once had in Francistown.

Yet, he remains undeterred.

“This motivates me to work harder and find new opportunities,” he says, optimistic about Lennygraphy’s future.

One key to his business’s growth has been a commitment to excellent service.

Chendo prioritises timely delivery, setting himself apart in an industry often criticised for delays.

“When a client is happy, I’m happy,” he says with a smile.

“A satisfied client brings more customers, so I ensure I deliver on time and as promised.”

However, the journey isn’t without hurdles.

Chendo cites delayed payments and late arrivals as common challenges, which disrupt his schedule and affect his earnings.

Still, he remains committed to professionalism and finding solutions.

For aspiring photographers, Chendo offers sage advice:

“Sharpen your craft before starting a business. Be patient and understand the market.”

His words underscore the value of preparation and perseverance in building a successful career.

Lennygraphy’s impact extends beyond its studios.

It’s a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and resilience. Whether capturing weddings, birthdays, or everyday moments, Chendo’s mission is clear: to make every click count.
