Botswanaโ€™s entertainment scene may be stepping into a new era.

On April 25, Jazz at Pacers lands in Thamaga โ€” not just as a concert, but as a curated lifestyle experience led by ๐Œ๐ฉ๐ก๐จ ๐‹๐ž๐จ๐ง๐š๐ซ๐.

Blending live jazz and Afro-pop performances with wine tasting, fashion, and food, the event is positioning itself as a premium offering aimed at raising the standard for both artists and audiences.

Performers including ๐Š๐ž๐š๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐š ๐‘๐š๐ง๐ญ๐š๐จ, ๐‹๐ž๐ณ๐ข๐›๐จ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ก๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข ๐‹๐จ say platforms like this are key โ€” especially as Botswana looks to revive live band culture and unlock the economic potential of its creative industry.

The bigger question:

Masego Gilbert, Medical Advisor at Bomaid, is raising concern over the growing impact of cervical cancer on young women in Botswana.

Moraki Mokgosana, CEO of Bomaid, says rising healthcare costs in Botswana are being driven in part by fraud, waste, and abuse within the system.

Speaking during a media stakeholder engagement, Mokgosana revealed that Bomaid spent close to P1 billion on healthcare in 2025 โ€” but between P50 million and P150 million of that may have been lost to inefficiencies and non-essential expenses.

He warned that these costs are ultimately passed on to members through higher premiums.

Bomaid is now investing in analytics and working with healthcare providers and customers to identify and reduce these leakages โ€” though Mokgosana cautioned that reforms may be disruptive.
๐Ÿ“Œ The message: tackling waste is key to keeping healthcare affordable.

Prof. Jeremy Seekings says the 2024 election outcome in Botswana wasnโ€™t just about voter sentiment โ€” the electoral system itself played a decisive role.

Presenting insights from Botswana Notes and Records Volume 57, Seekings explained that:

Had the Botswana Democratic Party secured around 40% of the vote (down from 54% in 2019), it might have remained the largest party
But once support dropped below 40%, the system began working against it โ€” amplifying its losses

Despite the setback, the BDP still retained around 30% of the vote and performed relatively well in district council races.

The research combines:

Afrobarometer survey data on public opinion
Ground-level fieldwork across constituencies
Case studies from areas like Kgatleng West, Shoshong, and parts of the Central District

The key takeaway?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Local dynamics, candidate selection, and regional identity played a major role โ€” not just national trends.

Jeremy Seekings says even seasoned scholars were caught off guard by the scale of change in Botswanaโ€™s 2024 General Elections.Speaking on behalf of the Botswana Election Research Network, Seekings noted that while analysts anticipated a more competitive race, they did not foresee the ruling party dropping to around 30% support or losing its parliamentary majority.Even more unexpected:The Umbrella for Democratic Change securing an outright majority

In his acceptance speech, Boko described himself as โ€œprimus inter pares โ€” first among equals,โ€ stressing that he is no better than others, but committed to serving the institution.

He highlighted Botswanaโ€™s push toward digital transformation, scientific progress and innovation, pointing to initiatives like the launch of the countryโ€™s satellite and the establishment of a national research and development fund.

Speaking at an editorsโ€™ roundtable, Keabetswe revealed that the project previously failed due to factors including foot-and-mouth disease restrictions and lack of partner funding.

Now, a new approach is being rolled out:

Partnerships with experienced international dairy experts
Skills transfer programmes over 18โ€“24 months
Plans to expand into dairy processing โ€” including cheese, yogurt, and ice cream

As part of the restart, Botswana is set to import up to 1,000 cattle from Brazil, with the first batch already secured and currently in quarantine before arrival in Botswana.

Keabetswe emphasised that BDC will focus on financing and structuring, while leaving farming operations to specialists โ€” aiming to build a sustainable, job-creating dairy industry.

Speaking at an editorsโ€™ roundtable, Keabetswe explained that the capital commitment from Qatar's Al Mansour Holdings is not money sitting in the bank โ€” but a pledge to invest in viable projects once they meet required standards.

He said projects must first move from concept to feasibility and bankability before being submitted for funding consideration.
The potential investments are expected to span key sectors including energy, infrastructure and logistics โ€” with BDC acting as a catalyst to bring projects to investment stage across Botswana.

President Duma Boko last year said that Botswana signed an agreement with Qatar's Al Mansour Holdings, which will commit $12 billion in investments to accelerate national development goals.

The deal was signed in partnership with state-owned Botswana Development Corporation.

"This transformative partnership spans infrastructure, energy, mining, the diamond industry, agriculture, tourism, cybersecurity and defense, driving economic stability, diversification and long-term prosperity," Boko said in a statement on Facebook.
