WEATHER ALERT: COLD SPELL EXPECTED NEXT WEEK

DATE: 08/08/2026

The Department of Meteorological Services wishes to inform the public of a cold spell expected to affect most parts of the country from Monday, 10th August 2026, to Thursday, 13th August 2026.

The inflow of cold air is expected to result in significantly lower temperatures, particularly over the southern and eastern parts of the country. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฎยฐ๐—– ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿญยฐ๐—– in these areas, while temperatures over the northern parts are expected to range between ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฎยฐ๐—– ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฒยฐ๐—–.

Minimum temperatures are expected to range between -๐Ÿญยฐ๐—– ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐Ÿณยฐ๐—– countrywide.

The cold conditions are expected to result from a ridge extending from the Atlantic Ocean high-pressure cell, coupling with a westerly trough. This weather system will advect cold, dry air over most parts of the country, resulting in very cold to cold conditions.

An improvement in both maximum and minimum temperatures is expected from 13th August 2026.

In view of the anticipated weather conditions, members of the public are advised to:

- Dress warmly, particularly during the early morning and evening hours.
- Minimise prolonged exposure to the cold conditions.
- Take appropriate precautions to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly young children and older persons.

The Department of Meteorological Services will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

โ€ŽParliament has rejected a motion calling on Government to commit to allocating residential plots to all persons on the waiting list within the next three years.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe motion, tabled by Bobirwa MP Taolo Lucas, requested Government's commitment to facilitate home ownership for a significant proportion of Batswana by clearing the residential plots waiting list in three years.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽMinister of Lands and Agriculture Dr Edwin Dikoloti opposed the motion in his response in Parliament yesterday.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽDikoloti said he did not oppose the principle of equitable access to land, noting that every Motswana aspires to own a home and that Government recognises that aspiration. He described land ownership as one of the greatest instruments for wealth creation, social security and national pride, adding that it provides dignity, promotes investment and strengthens communities.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽHowever, Dikoloti said that while the objective of the motion was noble, its proposal was neither practical nor achievable. He said Parliament has a duty not merely to endorse aspirations, but to adopt resolutions that are realistic, affordable and capable of implementation.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽHe said it would be irresponsible for Parliament to direct Government to commit itself to an undertaking that cannot reasonably be fulfilled within the proposed timeframe.
