The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has suspended the counting and announcement of results from the countryโs general election with immediate effect, citing reports of violence targeting polling staff.
Zambians voted on 13 August to elect a president, members of parliament and local officials. Official results had not yet been declared when the suspension was announced.
Opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, earlier claimed victory based on his campaignโs parallel voter tabulation.
In a statement, Mundubile said the tabulation indicated his side had won both the presidency and a majority of parliamentary seats. He expressed โgrave concernโ over delays in the transparent announcement of presidential results, warning that the delay could create opportunities for interference or manipulation.
Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema, who is seeking a second term issued a statement urging calm.โWe continue to receive encouraging results, alongside reports of peace, unity and solidarity across our country. There is much to be grateful for. Let us remain peaceful, patient and patriotic as we await the official outcome from those entrusted with managing the vote,โ he said.
