𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁?
In the mist of a collapsing public health and uncertainty, In a surpring move the authorities have approved yet another wasteful event that will gobble millions from Botswana Prison Service called (Re-Integration Conference) to be held this month (August). While across the country prisoners cannot attend court cases in different places due to depletion of diesel in the country caused by financial constraints yet we can afford to throw large amounts in millions for events that don't bring revenue in the eyes of a collapsing economy. Junior Officers can be paid the 15% special allowance they had been promised by the Commissioner of Prisons rather than saving loans for them, who will later account for this millions too ?

In a passionate plea to the National Assembly, Acting Opposition Leader Taolo Lucas is sounding the alarm on the safety of Botswana's police officers. Following a string of brutal attacks on law enforcement, Lucas is urging Commissioner Dinah Marathe to rethink police protocols and arm officers with the tools they need to stay safe - literally.

Lucas wants police to be kitted out with non-lethal gear to defend themselves, and for those who've been traumatized by attacks to get the support they need. But that's not all - he's also throwing open the debate on whether it's time for Botswana's police to go armed. "We need to have a conversation about arming our officers," Lucas declared. "We owe it to them to keep them safe." With rising concerns about police safety, Lucas's call to action is set to spark a heated debate."

We want to hear from you as well , what are your views on arming the police in Botswana.

Minister for State President, Moeti Mohwasa, has introduced the Conventional Arms Control Bill, which aims to enable local manufacturing of weapons in Botswana.

If passed, the bill will allow Batswana to apply for permits to enter the industry. Mohwasa justified the bill, stating that it's time for Botswana to shift from importing to manufacturing and exporting goods, promoting self-sufficiency and economic growth.

The Botswana Police Service (BPS) recently destroyed 263 confiscated and obsolete fi****ms at the Botswana Police College in Otse. The destroyed fi****ms included 164 shotguns, 96 rifles, 2 pellet guns, and 1 pistol.

This destruction is part of an annual initiative aligned with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) protocols on controlling small arms and light weapons. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Othusitse Monaka, some confiscated fi****ms were used in crimes like armed robbery, murder, and illegal hunting, while others were voluntarily surrendered by licensed owners or recovered as lost property.

ACP Monaka encouraged firearm permit holders with old or unserviceable weapons to surrender them at police stations and acquire new permits for replacements if needed. Senior Superintendent Gosekwang Sebitla, Officer Commanding Central Arms Registry, also reminded the public that SADC has designated September as Africa Amnesty Month, during which individuals can surrender illegal fi****ms without penalty.
