WEDDING TURNS SOUR AS THREE PEOPLE DIE IN ACCIDENT

By Gabz 24 Reporter

Three people traveling to Kang from the first leg of a wedding ceremony held in Otse died on the spot in the Ranaka village area on Sunday afternoon after the vehicle they were traveling in overturned following a tyre burst.

Among the traveling party of eight people was the bride who sustained injuries on her right leg. It is understood that there was to be the second leg of the wedding on Monday in Kang where elders and other people preparing for the day were happily waiting.

Eye witness account suggests that the red Toyota Venture was traveling at a moderate speed of around 90 kilometers per hour when the accident occurred. A lady who was first on the accident scene told GABS 24 that the accident happened shortly after the Toyota Venture overtook them.
“Our van was going at the speed of 80 kilometers per hour and the Toyota Venture wasn’t really moving at any high speed either when it went past us. Shortly after overtaking our car, we saw a cloud of dust which forced us to come to a halt because one couldn’t see anything ahead. When the dust subsided, the sad reality was revealed right in front of us,” said the eye witness lady who declined to share her names.

Another eye witness - an elderly man who was hitch-hiking a few meters ahead of where the accident occurred - said after hearing the loud boom from the bursting tyre, he saw the Toyota Venture move a short distance along the road as if the driver was in full control, but then suddenly it took a sharp swerve to the right and rolled twice, spitting some of the passengers in the process.
“When I saw items flying out of the rolling vehicle, I thought they were bags, only to realize when the vehicle had come to a halt that the ‘bags’ were actually some of the passengers,” narrated the seemingly disturbed man.

Onlookers who had converged at the scene minutes just before 4 o’clock that afternoon expressed anger and deep concern at the slow reaction from emergency services. The accident took place about five kilometres south of Ranaka and the first road users to stop at the scene said they immediately called the police and then 997, the government emergency number, which they say for the entire time they kept calling, was never answered.

"The police from Kanye were the first to arrive, but close to an hour later. They came in two separate vehicles, a small Bantum bakkie and a landcruiser which were used to help carry the injured and the deceased to the hospital in Kanye," another bystander told GABZ 24.

Little help was offered by the multitudes of people who thronged the accident scene. Some stood there and watched either with folded arms or held-out mobile phone cameras as the police kept begging for some working space.

According to one Mma Mashaba, Kanye Seventh Day Adventist Hospital’s Chief Registered Nurse who responded to this publication's telephone inquiry, the injured were still hospitalized even at the time of writing this story. She did confirm the three deaths and said two of the injured were immediately referred to Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone. The other three, among them the bride, were in stable condition at the hospital in Kanye.

Efforts to get through to the Kanye Police failed after several attempts. However, speaking from Botswana Police Service headquarters in Gaborone the following day, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Dipheko Motube confirmed the accident, saying he was yet to receive the full brief as investigations into the accident were still underway. The deceased were 52 and 56-year-old women, both from Otse, while the other was a 68-year-old man from Mogobane. This publication can safely confirm that the Monday wedding ceremony scheduled for Kang was eventually called off.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD

BY AOBAKWE GAGOBEPE

Bella Thomas is a young lady of 23 years born and raised in Francistown, an accountant by profession (not practicing) and a proud owner/director of LeSublime hair Bw. Growing up she always had interest in entrepreneurship but she didn’t understand a lot of protocols needed to run a successful business.
In an interview with Bella she stated that in 2017 just after she graduated she decided to take the entrepreneurial route and there were so many reasons why she ended up running Lesublimehair and she also mentioned few,
’’Just after graduating I opened a travel and tours business which had 2 quantum’s... I didn’t have so much knowledge about the tourism industry. In addition, I didn’t have adequate financial literacy to run such a business hence lead to me losing my 2 quantum’s and the business failed! ….Beginning of 2018 I stayed 3 months straight without any source of income. In those three months, that’s when a lot of thoughts jarred in my head! I was worried about my future I knew I had to do something... * Passion* was a push factor to jump-start my hair business! I have always had passion for hair and selling any products! It was then, when I knew that if I just run a business which is driven by passion, I’ll be so enthusiastic to learn about the industry, how to carry out the day to day activities of the business’ and look where the business is now!’’
Bella is one person who believes in network marketing and her products speaks for themselves, ‘If one customer buys a wig I’m sure I can get 3-5 customers just from them wearing that wig!’ She also use social media platforms to advertise her products which really help increase her sales. She also said that she is 50/50 happy with what she has at the moment because this year her business was affected by the pandemic significantly due to delayed shipments, and when something in the supply chain gets disrupted, it affects the delivery of her products. She said that even though her sales went down she still made profits.
Lastly she said she would love to become a supplier in the next 2 years, she want to sell in bulk and help other young entrepreneurs open up or rather start their own businesses and her every motivation Is Eric Thomas’s quote “knowing your why will make you wake up everyday and show up! No excuses!’’ therefore knowing my why motivates me to show up every day and love to share my why with you but I’d rather keep it personal and she love learning from people in the same industry, and she watches so many YouTube channels but have a specific one that she really learn from and that’s how she generate new ideas.

THE FIRST BIG BAND IN BOTSWANA

BY: Obositse Mudala

Botswana society For Jazz Education is a society that was founded by a Mrs Akhutleng Mogami. She has been a music teacher for 18 years to date. Mrs Mogami is also a Saxophone player by passion. She has travelled around the world playing in Jazz Festivals and Jazz workshops. This is where she got an inspiration to start BOSJE formally known as Botswana society For Jazz Education which further grew to become the first band in Botswana to have a big band.
BOSJE has been running for almost 6 years. Their main mandate is to nature, groom and produce professional musicians from a very a young age. In 2018 BOSJE hosted the first International Jazz Day Celebrations which is also being promoted by UNESCO. Five days before the International Jazz Day, BOSJE hosts music workshops and it invites music schools from across the country and they facilitate music learning sessions to students.
These workshops have been running since 2018. This year in 2020, it could not be possible because of Covid-19 global pandemic that broke through. However, this did not stop BOSJE from making efforts on growing the music subject in Botswana. They decided to record the workshops in video and put everything together into a USBs to disseminate. They are currently going around the country donating musical instruments to music schools. This has proven to be a great step of elevation as donating the USB's to the students also would allow them to learn music any time.

Musician, ‘TT’ of Putridity of Sebeke, explains the experience of his first ever performance at Molepolole. Despite TT’s split-second stage fright he owned the stage and the crowd went crazy, the friends that tagged along with him were amazed at the degree of talent he has, he even did crowd dives his third show at an all-night event at a farm, he went crazy to the point where lights blacked out as he overloaded the Amplifiers, Starting off as a one man band being called for shows was something big for him.

Lekofi and musician, Duncan Senyatso, had created an album that provided a different perspective upon music and the exploring of different narratives of sound with African rhythm was emotional, manoeuvring between keys and executing a beautiful song is a unique skill only a few use well. Sound has infinite layers and learning and innovating it is something magical and therapeutic.
