AU Delegation visits Botswanaโs FMD Centre to strengthen regional response
Officials from the African Union (AU) today visited the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) National Emergency Operation Centre in Gaborone, in a move aimed at bolstering regional cooperation to combat the disease and supporting Botswanaโs ongoing control measures.
During the tour, the team responsible for managing the outbreak outlined key interventions implemented by the government to contain the virus. These include the enforcement of quarantine protocols, restrictions on the movement of livestock, and targeted vaccination campaigns designed to prevent further spread.
Mr Guido Geissler, the leader of the AU delegation, noted that Botswana has been selected within the SADC region to collaborate on the implementation of agricultural policy initiatives. He also stressed the importance of identifying areas where Germany could benchmark and learn from Botswanaโs agricultural practices.
Dr Baitse Podisi, an animal scientist, explained that in response to challenges affecting the agricultural sector, including climate change, the Government is revising its agricultural strategies in line with Vision 2036. The objective is to reduce the countryโs overreliance on diamonds by strengthening and commercialising the agricultural sector. He emphasised that Foot and Mouth Disease remains a significant obstacle, underscoring the need for proactive planning.
Botswana continues to monitor the spread of the disease through strict control of animal movement, livestock vaccination programmes, enhanced biosecurity measures, public education campaigns, and robust legal frameworks.
